Ascroft says that illegal aliens can be held indefinetly without bond. Read the article, it's not only about Arabs, but
Ashcroft sees it as a way of stemming illegal immigration from Haiti. Reasoning? If they see that we can put them in jail forever, they might not try to come to the US. Oh, and some Pakistanis and Palestinians might try to come into the US via Haiti. You know, because it is so much harder to slip in from Canada. And you thought Al Qaeda was the single greatest threat to "the American way".

I bet I could differentiate a Pakistani from a haitian at 100 yrds. I sure they much more resourceful methods once thier in custody. It's fact they are using the state dept as an excuse not to use discression and investigation of the refugees comming in..

Sounds right to me. I don't like Ashcroft and his policies, but I don't see a problem in this case. Perhaps he should add Mexicans to the list as well - but instead of jail, it should say deportation

I don't know the facts in this case but isn't Ashcroft's ruling primarily to clarify who has jurisdiction over setting bail for illegal immigrants ?

Doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

sure, deporting illegal aliens is acceptable, but imprisoning them indefinitely sounds rather fascist to me. also, i really don't want to have my tax dolors going to support the imprisonment of people for such things.

Since when has this administration bothered showing anything to any judge to justify what they do? This whole administration is about removing the check the judicial branch holds over the executive, this is no different.

Since when has this administration bothered showing anything to any judge to justify what they do? This whole administration is about removing the check the judicial branch holds over the executive, this is no different.

When has any case against the administration come to court? Judges can't just rule on a whim....

That said, I agree that illegal immigrants should not be supported by the United States. Deport them.
