It would have been more impressive if an atheist had done this. This guy thinks he is going to magical lala land after he dies, so it doesn't really matter to him.

My god...you know, you thought people like this only existed in movies.

 to his family, especially to his parents for raising such an amazing son.

Awesome. Make me (and probably alot of us) if we had the courage to do something like that. God bless him.

thats purple heart worthy, no?

very very brave, and honestly i respect every single armed forces member.

congratulations to his parents for raising such a brave kid.

any injury by enemy fire is purple heart worthy, this was definitely more than that

A piece of plaster came loose and landed on my grandfathers foot. He got a purple heart for it... This man deserves a congresional medal of honor.

Medal of honor, Purple heart, NOTHING MATTERS ANYMORE, this man is now dead, any award he gets will not benefit him, all it is is an attempt to make his family feel some form of pride for the actions of their son. A piece of metal or ribbon or award or whatever should not be required for the family to feel pride, Why are people so damn materialistic This man is dead, and now he has to answer to a higher power, I hope that he died for the righth reason, personally, I think not, because you have to remember that on the other end of the sniper scope is another human being that is fighting for his/her reason whether it be patriotic ones or religious ones, he also has a family and life of his own, and he views the sniper as "evil" just as the sniper views him as "evil" but nonetheless the one who dies for the higher power has a more meaningful death than the one who dies for something materialistic or man-made. <my opinion

regardless though, my condolences go out to his family

May god forgive us all for our sins.

Sad waste of life more than anything else...being killed at the hands of an enemy we created.

Yeah...we definitely "created" the terrorists :disgust:.

This man lost his life so that you could walk outside everyday without worrying about a car bomb going off.

Why don't you go over there and sympathize with the insurgents.

Jackass.

But go ahead, please enlighten us how big the Iraqi insurgency was before we dropped the first bomb. Or better yet, how many Americans did the insurgency kill before our soldiers invaded?

Nevermind, you're totally right. We would have been knee-deep in Iraqi insurgents here in the States if our soldiers weren't over there

I know it won't happen, but I wish Bush would loose one night of sleep after hearing about this story (and stories like it) I hate the war, but I have nothing for respect and support for our troops over there fighting. Bush is an asshole, and this story is incredibly sad. I can't even begin to say what I'd do in his case, but when they said he never took his eyes off the granade. That is pure heart.

RIP solider, as f*cked up as Bush might be, it's people like you who make me still love this country.

Bush not being able to sleep cause of this? you gotta be out of your mind.. sigh

Yea, I'm sure he did this to impress you and his buddies.

This kind of stuff makes me so mad. Why haven't we heard about this yet? This is a disgrace if this happened 2 weeks ago and it's been confirmed and it's just coming about now. I know writers, reporters, and correspondents have to be careful after stuff like the Jessica Lynch story (wasn't that her name?) where stories are highly exaggerated but it sure would be nice to read about some true heroes. It seems like the bloggers and soldier death mongers were the only people who knew about this.... I mean come on.

This is the type of men that America was founded by. I can only hope to be that brave in time of adversity.

A grenade is less powerful than you think.

think about it. Then post again

Seriously.

In the movies one sees a single grenade making huge explosions, sometimes not so huge. So having no idea how powerful a grenade is, it's not intuitive to think that one man jumping on a grenade will shield the blast enough to protect others nearby.

EDIT: Grammar

I'm guessing that the torso keeps the super-hot gases from escaping up top (and therefore goes along the ground) and absorbs all the fragmenting shards.

The movies make a grenade explosion seem like a small nuclear detonation. It's done for the OOHH and AAAHH effect.

Bingo. The torso absorbs the blast and reduces the shock of the blast. It also absorbs most of the shrapnel fragments.
