I was hoping to get people in here that have seen this.

I have two kids. A 6.5 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. They have Kiki Delivery Service, Ponyo and Tottoro. They love them and I think they are age appropriate.

I've also avoided some of these style movies because my reading has led me to say that my kids are to young.

Sadly, common sense media has no review for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It sounds liek a wonderful story. So, is it appropriate for a 4 year old and6 year old? My reading seems to say yes. The environmental message it sends seems wonderful.

This is more for my son. My daughter is getting Tagnled. Granted tehy will both watch both of them.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Added Kiki Delivery Service to the above message.

It would be fine until the end, which is quite violent. It might scare your 4 year old.

It's a wonderful movie, though, and one of my favorite Studio Ghibli productions.

I think so. I can't really think of anything in it that wouldn't be ok for a 6 year old, 4 year old maybe. I really enjoyed it, and the music is awesome. It's got a cool 80's feel to it. Joe Hisaishi is probably my favorite movie composer, and of course Miyazaki rocks.

I think it would be fine. Some violence and don't remember language being a big deal. Keep in mind though, my only child is 2 months old, so haven't really thought about what is appropriate yet.

OK, I am fine with a spoiler. What is th ending like? I need to know before buying.

This is the violent bit:
There are these big monsters that stampede an army and almost over run a village. The army then awakes this huge robot that shoots fire from its mouth at the stampeding monsters. The monsters are stopped, and there is a happy ending, but it does get kind of scary when the huge robot thing (it's ugly and disfigured) shoots huge flames out of its mouth at stampeding monsters.

That bit might scare a 4 year old girl.

its overrated, the environmental message is pretty hamfisted in many of those films.

its not really a robot, its some type of giant warrior, like an elemental I guess, but its not fully matured and is disintegrating (like red goop pouring out all its orifices on its face and all off its body) and its head falls off

that would be the part that might be hard to explain to kids imo

badass movie though

It was one of many robots created for a war that turned into a catastrophe that destroyed in the environment.

well its biological not really a robot

God Warriors Bioengineered Giants who brought the total destruction of the world in the "Seven Days of Fire". It was believed that all the God Warriors died then and were fossilized by the time of Nausicaä, but the discovery of a live God Warrior under Pejite has changed the course of history. This particular God Warrior holds the key to the end of the story.

but whether you call it a robot or a god warrior or whatever, my main point is that its death is very organic and not like a robot, that's what i think might be a problem...

there used to be a great clip of that scene on youtube, but i can't seem to find it aside from parts of it in this korean trailer:

Yeah, the fact that it was biological and falling apart is probably a big part of my concern for a 4 year old girl. It looks pretty scary and gross.

I think My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Ponyo are the best movies for younger audiences. Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Porco Russo, Spirited Away are better suited to a bit older crowd, and of course Princess Mononoke is definitely a PG-13 movie. In some ways Porco Russo is too, but it's no where near as grotesque.

I don't see why any of Hayao Miyazaki movies would be inappropriate for the youngins'. They may not quite understand it now, but if/when they come back to it when older it may make more sense.
I know I've seen plenty of films when was a shorty that didn't make much sense until I was older.

I don't see how they'd be any better or worse than other childrens' films out there.

Too young for Nausicaa. I showed the film recently to my 8 year old daughter and she was scared during some parts. Wonderful book and film. One of my all time favorite. I have the books and film.

My screen name is in tribute to Nausicaa.
