Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Just got this on DVD. From acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki, the man who brought us Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I saw this a long time ago when it was released as "Warriors of the Wind" in the states, an edited version that Miyazaki was none too pleased about. Disney re-released a much better version with an all-star voice casting including Alison Lohman, Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart and Edward James Olmos.

Here are some info: Link1, Link2

I recommend this to anyone, even those who discriminate against anime. Unlike most anime, this movie tells a good story without emphasizing style over substance, doesn't insult the viewers' intelligence, and one of the few films with strong female leads. The animation may be a little dated compared to Mononoke and Spirited Away since it is an earlier work, but is still very good. The movie itself is but a fraction of a larger story which Miyazaki took 13 years to capture in his manga. We are fortunate enough at least to capture a glimpse of the epic he spent so many years on.

the name Nausicaa in here doesn't have anything to do with the most beautiful woman in Greek Mythology?

Nausicaä was named after a Phaeacian princess in the Odyssey. Nausicaä was "a beautiful and fanciful girl, quick on her feet...She took delight in nature and had an especially receptive personality". She saved Odysseus when he drifted ashore covered with blood and then nursed his wounds...[snip]

Edit: Ah, you beat me to it.

It's very good. Saw it couple of years ago. Princess Mononoke and Spirited away is still Miyazaki's best work though.

this movie brings back memories. 🙂 I remember watching the entire movie as a child even though I didn't understand a single word.

Having read the manga (translated) and watching the movie, I would have to disagree. Nausicaa, to me, is still his best work. I'm much more into the epic story telling.
