Natural (herbal) amphetamines? (not caffeinne, please)

I'm tired of being tired. I know that I should get more sleep, but that is not possible due to my second job and child situation.

I have always been that person that laughs at you because you believe in all that GinkoBalboa, Snotgrass, Wheatsoup, Yohomohimebee crap.

But, it's time for me to try something new. I need more energy. I already take a multivitamin everyday. That's the only thing keeping me from being admitted to a hosptial for exhaustion.

Bluntly, illegal drugs (meaning pills, ok?) are out as I get urine tested randomly and pretty regularly at that. Requirement of my job. Anyway...

What natural pills/supplements can I take that will give me some damn energy. Yes, I know that the "higher you go, the lower you fall" when it wears off. I don't care anymore. I need some energy. If it wouldn't kill me, I'd stick my finger in a wall socket for a quick boost.

Fire away.

Caffeine is it. Stay away from ephedra, unless you are craving to know what being paralyzed by a stroke is like.

exersice? I know it can be hard with time constraints but 1 hour 3 times a week can really boost your energy levels.

Ginsing has been reported to boost energy levels... I tried it for a while but didn't notice any difference at all.

IMHO, looking for energy in a bottle isn't going to work. How much sleep do you get on a given night?

P.S. And why no caffeine?

Cut down on refined sugars and carbohydrates (i.e. no junkfood whatsoever)
Drink lots of water...like a gallon per day

Those two things will do more than any pill could ever do, but if you are already doing both then start excercising as well.

Hi there,

I already drink 3-4 cups of coffee a day. It makes me pee like a racehorse (TMI, but I had to explain 😉)

I get between 4-5 hours of sleep a night. That was more than enough when I was 23, but now, at 33, things are drastically different. I find my head bouncing off my monitor at job #1. I'm cranky, irritable and impatient under the best of circumstances, but when I'm this tired, it only exacerbates the situation.

Heh... OK, so caffeine is out.

Kami's got the right idea. Hard to believe I know but the food you eat can have a lot to do with feeling tired. Try eating several small meals instead of a couple of big ones. And yes, the more carbohydrates you eat the more you're going to feel tired and listless.

Try the Zone diet, and if you're going to eat carbs, do as kami says and eat complex, unrefined carbs (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc.). I think you'll find that after a week or so of doing that you'll not only feel less tired but healthier in general.

In short, simple refined carbohydrates are the debbil.

Hmmm...do you ever have time for a quick nap during the day (even 30 min)? Nothing like some shut-eye and the accompanying shot of HGH to perk you up.

You're not going to like this, but omitting alcohol might help too. IIRC, alcohol allows you to fall asleep faster as you're relaxed (or passed out😀) but your sleep is less deep and therefore less restful. I find that I'll generally wake up in the middle of the night for no good reason after being out for beers earlier and then not be able to get back to sleep. Might help, might not, but can't hurt to try.

Hmm. I think you should look at your diet, as this is going to affect you more than just about anything else. Oh, people have already said this. But yeah, I bet that is it.

It's really terrible. Most people don't eat hardly anything that's good for them! You can't survive off McDonalds for very long, and if you try.. your quality of life is going to go down the toilet.

Try to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, juice drinks, etc. Try to avoid pop and fast food.

Nobody should have to take a multivitamin. There's no point. You can get every single vitamin and mineral you need from fruits and vegetables. Another plus is that those same fruits and vegetables have many compounds, such as powerful antioxidants that you don't get in the synthetic vitamin pill.

Most people go around feeling like sh!t all the time. But they don't realize it, because they've always felt like that, and are used to it. :Q I know that when I decided to take the challenge for myself, and ate nothing but organic plant matter(fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds) for a week, I felt better than I ever had before. The difference was really amazing. You should try it. 🙂

Great advice guys. Thank you. Now, I just have to crack the whip on myself and follow it. Here's some more facts.

1. I get home from job #2 anywhere b/t 2200 and 2400. I usually will have a beer or two....rarely three, to "relax" as I feel I deserve it after a 16-hour+ day, and b/c it DOES make me sleepy. See, at that point, I'm physically exhausted, but running on pure adrenaline.

2. I eat like crap. No breakfast. Huge lunch. No dinner, but after those two beers, I'll have a sandwich or frozen pizza.

3. On weekends, I make a big, healthy dinner with rice/vegetables and usually have leftovers which I'll eat at #2 above..until the leftovers run out, then I eat crap again.

I'll try to eat better and see what happens. Thanks much. Now, excuse me; I have to go get a 16-ounce Jolt! out of the vending machine. 😉

Like haybusa said, stick with caffeine or maybe exercise. Ephedra sucks, but since you don't have a tolerance to it, it may be the way to go, but beware, if you think you pee alot from coffee, ephedra is 10 times worse. Taurine and guarana are very closely related to caffeine, so you likely already have a tolerance to them.
