Native Resolutions On an LCD???

Im a little confused about how Native resolutions work on LCD monitors

So far i have read that the best resolution for the monitor is the native resolution as LCD's rely on scaling which means that there will be some distortion when changing to some resolutions such as 1280x1024 on a widescreen LCD

Is this correct? Can you give me any more details?

i also have a question:
I have a 22" LG LCD monitor at the moment and the native resolution is 1680x1050, will i suffer any distortion if i move the resolution to 1440x900 as this is still 16:10 and just a downscale of 1/3


 
distortion is on every resolution, regardless of aspect ratio, with different aspect ratio you just get skewed image.

You could run something called 1:1 which essentially makes picture in center and black box on sides and/or top and bottom, like when you watch widescreen movie
 
That 22" does not sport it's own 1:1 pixel mapping feature. You're going to have to rely on drivers to do it. If you have a Nvidia card this could be a problem.
 
Yep i have an Nvidia Card (7900gs)

1680x1050 isnt so bad, just have to turn down a few settings compared to 1280x1024

It doesnt look to bad on 1440x900 the picture is just a little less sharp
