National Security Advisor: Airline Bomber Report to "Shock" Americans

WASHINGTON — White House national security adviser James Jones says Americans will feel "a certain shock" when they read an account being released Thursday of the missed clues that could have prevented the alleged Christmas Day bomber from ever boarding the plane.
President Obama "is legitimately and correctly alarmed that things that were available, bits of information that were available, patterns of behavior that were available, were not acted on," Jones said in an interview Wednesday with USA TODAY.

"That's two strikes," Obama's top White House aide on defense and foreign policy issues said, referring to the foiled bombing of the Detroit-bound airliner and the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, in November. In that case, too, officials failed to act when red flags were raised about an Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Hasan. He has been charged with killing 13 people.

Jones said Obama "certainly doesn't want that third strike, and neither does anybody else."

In other news on Sunday...
John O. Brennan denies that infighting in the intelligence community is at fault and says there is no 'smoking gun' that would have pointed to the attempted Christmas Day bombing.
http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-and-world/la-na-brennan-terror4-2010jan04,0,5478759.story

And a week ago we had
The system worked...
http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?docID=news-000003273705

So which is it?
Did the system work?
Is there a smoking gun?
Was their an intelligence breakdown?

When (if ever) will we see Obama's strike 3?
(I guess the murder of an army recruiter by a terrorist doesn't count.)

There's already been three because the army recruiter does count. Shaking hands or apologizing to those that want us dead isn't working which is no shock to the majority of us.

We're not as safe as we were under our former President. Of that there can be no doubt. The facts speak for themselves. We won't be as safe with this President until he can come to grips with the reality that Islamic fanatics want to kill us. He must grow up, recognize the threat and act accordingly. School yard politics is not going to keep us safe.

This guy does not have it in him. He's ill-equipped for this job. Many of us knew this. 144 days in the Senate while voting "Present". Referring to acts of terrorism as "man made disasters" is just childish.

Put a prepared speech in front of him and the words flow like honey. Unfortunately, there's far, far more to the job than this. He's incompetent and incapable. If he had some balls, he'd step down.

Maybe after the next terrorist act he will. Unfortunately for us, I think he knows no shame. In true schoolyard fashion, he probably feels he's doing the best he can and feels we should all just make allowances for him.

I lived through the Carter days. He was better and believe you me, I NEVER thought I'd be saying that.

I don't know how shocking this will really turn out to be that we didn't already know.

What did GWB do that Obama isn't doing? Do you think Bush's tough cowboy talk scared anyone, especially when delivered by a complete fucking moron? Was Obama apologizing when he dedicated 30K more troops to Afghanistan? JFC you critics are pathetic sometimes. Actually often. Actually usually.

Keep crying about the sky falling. The only way to make our country 100% secure would be to take away Rights. I know you and your ilk would be all for it, fortunately the majority are willing to live with the risks to be free.

You know, It isn't surprising that someone got through, even with warning signals. Its a freaking big system. The airport isn't some sort of closed bubble. How many times do you think they see suspicious activity, per day?

Personally, I would rather go about my day at the airport with the 1/1000000000000000000000000 chance that the plane gets attacked and having less of the leads being followed up on then being tackled by a squad of armed military units if I pick my nose funny.

Or, The more info you collect, the more resources you have to spend to check it out. Right now they collect WAY more info then they could possibly hope to send leads out to check.

And lets not forget, all of this extra security at airports fail to work the moment a terrorist blows up an office building instead of an airplane.

Agree. Which is why we need to start PROFILING. Stop this PC crap with frisking grandma and anyone whose ticket generates the random code at the counter that that person needs extra checking at security. No...we need to profile most/all young middle-eastern males at airports. Of course, that will never happen so now all of us will have to be inconvenienced. PC is preventing us from winning this war. I just hope the sensible among us wake up before it's too late.

I believe that when terrorists are reduced to planting bombs in their underwear that only results in them burning their balls off something is working right with security. I guess now they'll have to shove the bombs up their asses since the underwear tactic has been discovered.

the question is why didn't the thing work? these guys are pretty handy with explosives it seems, how did they fail here? did the guy wet or crap the primer cord so it failed?

could the thing have been supposed to fail so that the circus of his capture and trial keeps it in the news even longer than a splash of a single plane?

I don't want to take away rights. I want every single fucking one I'm entitled to. I want back the ones I've lost too.

I made a comment in a thread in OT about us losing rights and you changed my name as you've done now and made some third grade comments.

You're not happy with me when you think I'm promoting taking away rights and you're not happy when you think I'm promoting rights.

You're just not happy. Some day's it's kind of fun and funny to watch you scream at everyone to get off your lawn. Other days it's just a big drag. Today would be the latter.

Get some Viagra, take some Metamucil - whatever it takes. At least try to be consistent.

The fact is the TSA failed at the basic security level. This guy paid for his ticket with cash and had no luggage on a transcontinental flight. Exactly the same as the shoe bomber. How much more obvious does he have to be?

All this talk about profiling is ridiculous posturing-lets look more closely at the obvious suspects first based on their actual demonstrated behavior. And don't get me going on the "need" for full body scanners-in my mind that's as much of a "solution" as our new voting machines were to the demonstrated election procedures failure of 2000. Moneyed interests are trumping over common sense solutions, yet again.

Oh golly, should I fall for this or what.

You're asking me to defend Obama and that's not something I can do.

But let's see, what did GWB do different.

Here's what he didn't do.

He didn't apologize to other countries.
He didn't bow before leaders of other nations.
He called terrorists terrorists.
He didn't refer to acts of terrorism as man made disasters.
He didn't put people in charge of federal agencies that had no qualifications for the job. Leon Panetta and Janet Napolitano anyone?
He understood that there were people in the world that wanted to kill us through whatever means possible. Most importantly, he had no illusions that he could convince them otherwise. He approached the task as an adult would.

I can't defend your hero for you. His actions speak for themselves.

Fixed that for you.

Edit- I would argue that the most unqualified Bush cabinet member was Rumsfeld by a mile, he has caused for more damage than just about anyone, Paulson being a close second.

No way, Red, this idiot burning his balls off is far far more serious a national security breach than when Bush ignored all the signs leading up to 9/11!! How can you not see that the terrorists are winning!!!

Well I think that with experts like Boomerang who are so knowledgeable about the lower intestinal tract (due to their heads being lodged up there most of the time) there's no chance of terrorists being successful with Anal Bombs.

Good to see that some people are beginning to see how we are being manipulated, so that we can keep the people in fear. Now we can take more personal freedoms away so the Terrorists won't win. Allthough, by these actions they already have.
