awesome shows. anybody else watch them? Im still shocked on how the 5 gangs (blacks, whites, south mexicans, north mexicans, the others) are totally controlled by their generals who are locked away from the general population.

i dont know what those prison guards make but it would have to be 6 figures before i would even consider working in that environment.

prison guards are poorly paid, which is why they are so corrupt

close the prisons, they don't work

Prison Guards/COs get paid chicken feed for the most part. At Riker's Island in NYC, I believe starting salary is $32k a year, going to $34k a year after 6 months, and about $60k after 6 years. $60k for that type of work environment, living in NYC or the surrounding area is not much money.

However, the benefits are second to none for NYC CO.

I agree that our prisions aren't working in situations like this but what other solutions would there be?

Some people don't deserve to be put to death but also shouldn't be allowed to be in public, theres really no easy answer for this sort of situation.

all of my solutions to the failed prison system are too distasteful to "civilized" society, so we are stuck with this mess until our society collapses

i would replace long term prisons with corporeal punishments, caning and other humiliation techniques used in the pre-prison days

Oh no can't do that! Quick punishment the people can see is far worse than the slow torture of imprisonment.

I've seen these shows on NatGeo, and the most interesting thing to me was how imprisonment (or institutionalization) freezes the maturity of the inmates to basically a middle school level.

Bwahahaha! Sure! For all these guys that murder, rape, and generally do bad things we'll build a halfway house for them next door to you. Going on vacation? They'll watch it for you. Your daughter sweet like that? Let the boys have a little go with her, okay? And you, too!

Work? As in readjusting criminal behavior learned from years on the outside? No, it apears that it does not work for all. Work, as in terms of detaining and imprisoning? Hell, yeah they work.

And speaking of prison. South Africa just caught their most wanted after escaped from prison.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6205818.stm

Ananias Mathe is the first prisoner to escape from the C-max prison since it opened 36 years ago.

He reportedly escaped by covering his body in Vaseline and squeezing through his tiny cell window which measured just 20cm by 60cm (8in by 2ft).

Its pretty common knowledge that the local jailer around here hits you up as soon as your booked. "What kinda drugs you want? Cigarettes? ect.. ect.."
