I didn't know this, but apparently she is quite smart:
[*]Portman held a 4.0 GPA throughout high school
[*]She reported on a talk show, "I'd rather be smart than be a movie star" and that her goal was to graduate from college even if it ruined her acting career
[*]in June of 1999. Portman reportedly had to miss the premiere of Star Wars: Episode I so she could study for her high school final exams.
[*]After high school, Portman enrolled at Harvard University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology on June 5, 2003
[*]In 2005 Portman pursued graduate studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
[*]As a student, Portman co-authored two research papers which were published in professional scientific journals
[*]She is one of the few people with a finite Erdos-Bacon number, meaning she has both appeared in film (giving her a Bacon number) and co-authored at least one academic paper (giving her an Erdos number). These numbers are 9, 2, and 7, respectively.

and of course... pics

Good for her... but not any more impressive than many "normal" college students, imo.

At least she could probably take part in an intellectually stimulating conversation, unlike most people in Hollywood.

Oh, and she's definitely good looking, too :)

Nope, I am quite literate, thank you. She's intelligent and has obviously worked hard, but so have many students who also do a lot on the side, similar to her acting career. Kudos to her, and kudos to them.

I don't see that response as bitter; it's the same view I'd take on the subject. She's to be commended, as are the many other college graduates with similar accomplishments.

You'll find very very few college grads who are as phenominally sucessful as she is at 25.

Depends on how you define successful. If it's simply in terms of monetary gain, then no, there aren't likely to be many. However, I'm sure there are a decent amount (although still a minority) of grads who've accomplished as much in their domains of competence as she has in hers; hers just happens to pay a whole helluvalot more.

Beyond that, there's a lot to be said for being in the right place at the right time in terms of the entertainment industry.

You know, I used to find her rather unattractive.

However, anyone who can work their way through Harvard Psych with good grades and be phenominally sucessful by 25 - now that's hawt.

Go portman!

I doubt that many students have to juggle a hollywood career with their studies.

True, but in that same vein, I doubt many hollywood actors/actresses juggle the same responsibilities and concerns as nearly any other field would; it works both ways.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm not trying to take anything away from Natalie Portman; she's definitely accomplished quite a bit in her 25 years. I'm just saying that I feel many times, celebrities are given more credit for their accomplishments than are others who've done a comparable amount in their own particular areas of interest. That's just how things go.

bingo, you can bet her fame got her into that school, and a "psychology" degree is less impressive than others. as for responsibilities and such, money goes a long way, especially when you are talking millions, never mind her looks. its not that she hasn't done much, its giving too much credit because you think she's hot when many others have endured far more to get where they are without the hands of fate being as kind as they were to her.

Looks and brains, gotta love it.

BTW-Cindy Crawford was valedictorian of her high school class.

That means nothing. The #2 student in my class of 600 was a complete and total brain fart. She was a complete idiot, as well as a psychopath. In the very last quarter of school, she did something and dropped from #1 to #2 and the more intelligent seniors rejoiced.

Good grades and graduating at the top of the class are a sign of studying, turning in homework on time, not missing school, and doing some BS extra credit assignment.

I know some guys/girls who graduated with less than a 2.0 GPA that are some of the smartest people I know.

To the people saying that other college grads deserve the same credit as her: How many movies have those grads been in?

The fact that she graduated college isn't the big deal here. It's that she was an awesome student AND made movies.
