NAT problem

I have a Netgear router WGR614w2 but I dont use wireless.I have had big problems to join the gameservers when I play Command and Conquer Generals even though I opened the ports they suggested.I have 3 computers all connected to the router. Is it a problem in general to join gameservers when you have a router or could it be their gameserver?Anyway, the upcoming WOW is a game we want to play online perhaps on 2 or even 3 computers.Do you guys think it will be possible?can a switch be a better solution?Any hints, experiences would be appreciated.

I think some games/game servers don't like more than one request/game happening per IP address, which is what your NAT router is doing...any machine behind it will have the same IP.

The only way to get around it would be to get multiple IP addresses from your provider. Although I don't know the details of each and every game (been a long time since I played)

hope this helps.

thx but I wont have more than 1 ip ,I dont think it is possible..anyway,I think Blizzard will have a detailed info .I know every pc has a so called mac adress. It would be great if a gameserver recognized that and could differ the computers that way.

the mac address wont be correctly detected if the boxes are being proxied or nat'ed

once you go thru any layer3 device (router) the MAC address is replaced by the outgoing interface of that device.

MACs are layer2 addresses and are only locally significant on a single LAN.

geek tip for the day.

so it is impossible to join a gameserver with more than 1 computer if you are behind a router ?that is the conclusion I get.

The answer is, it depends on how smart the game is. For instance you can connect to Q3 based servers as many times as you want because Q3 based clients allow you to change the port they use for return traffic. Sadly most games rely on whatever networking code is bundled with DirectX and/or they don't think about NAT when they design the game so they don't work properly.

so WOW ,the upcoming Blizzard game,a game ment to be played only online, would be one of those smart games that can handle NAT?anyway,if I use a switch, would that be any better?I know,I lose the protection but for gaming,is that a better choice?

A switch won't work at all, if you do not have multiple WAN IP's from your provider. You need to ask the folks who made or use that game, they will know if it is "smart" enough to run multiple instances through a single WAN IP and a NAT device.
