NAT keeps changing to Moderate?

I've got a Linksys WRT54G-RG wireless router running firmware version 5.00.38. I've had it for a while and every few months my NAT will switch from Open to Moderate. I have my Xbox 360 wired into the router and on multiplayer games this becomes a big headache if it's not set to Open.

I've opened up the port ranges that Xbox Live uses and it typically runs fine for 2 or so months and out of the blue it will switch to moderate. Typically I go in and re-define said port ranges and it will open up but I can't think of why that would be what fixes it...unplugging the router seems to have no effect.

Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix it??

Are there new firmwares for your router? If so, have you experimented with them? Ive seen changes get made to routers sometimes when the power blips, does this seem to be happening?

Have you set UPnP to enabled? Xbox Live won't work right if this option is disabled.

edit: I've never had to open any ports for the Xbox...always has been "Open"

I wish I could help buddy but normally this is upnp and firmware related. Power everything off and bring router up first.

How old is the WRT54G-RG? It's not coming up on Linksys support site. Anyhow, this router is supported by DDWRT, I say give that a shot....or buy another/borrow a buddies spare router to test with.

I've done that a few times, no go.

It's simply a WRT54G that was made for "Roger's" internet in Canada (I live in the states though), it functions just like a WRT54G. It's a little older.

Last night it was giving me issues again so I tried fiddling with the Port Forwarding settings, even set up a DMZ...nothing worked. Finally I got frustrated and set my Xbox network settings to "Automatic" (what they used to be on) and it opened, but this is a short term fix (as it was the other day).

I've considered moving to DD-WRT but I have no idea how it works, how easy is it to set everything up after flashing it?

Flashing it the right way is the challenge, but instructions are easy to find just google away.. Setup is all GUI based, easy.

Just because it says WRT54G in the model doesn't mean it's the same as a WRT54G. Hell, the WRT54G has 8 revisions, almost none the same. Firmware makes all the difference..

Question, in my router settings it is set for "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" instead of Static IP. Could setting it to Static IP on the router help? If so, what's the method of doing this?
