Nasty white things in the back of your throat

What are these called? I get them a lot, but I forgot the name. I'm looking for more info on them, as I just took one of those suckers out with a Q-tip that started to bleed. Looking into getting my tonsils removed.

I got strep all the time when I was kid. Toughed it out, doctors were expensive.
