So I got this attachment in my e-mail..using outlook, and I'm pretty certain that I hit delete before I ran ran it..but it seems to have struck. What happens is that some of the shorcuts that I've been running from my quick launch menu have resulted in the deletion of the executable of that shortcut. So now I'm scared to load up any programs in fear that it will be deleted itself.

Anyone else ever get something similar? Where can I get a nice virus scanner to rid myself of this? I've tried going in the msconfig thing, and removing possible suspicious startup programs, including three "internet explorers", but they actually seem to come back. How can I get rid of them permanently?

AVG is a free download. Housecall (above) is ok -- it's free, but it'll only tell you if you have a virus. It won't prevent the next one.

AVG runs all the time, checking email, internet, new files, everything... If you keep the updates updated...

You also need to turn off the preview panel in OE/OEX. Many of the viruses will deploy out of the preview panel. And always watch the file extensions - if you're not expecting something, NEVER open one that is a .bat .exe .com .pif... and always be suspicious of the files with multiple extensions (e.g. filename.doc.pif)

Okay, so the file that it ran under was iexpIore..obviously trying to mask itself as iexplore. I went into msconfig, disabled it from starting up..but it would keep on re-enabling itself. I then went into safe mode and deleted the file. However now whenever I start windows it says that it cannot find iexpiore.

So..I check the path that is listed under msconfig, which is something found in the registry, but such a string does not exist. How can I prevent this start up message? I'm going to try searching the reg for all the iexpiore keys..
