Nasty, bacteria infested water in New Orleans

Is it just being pumped back into Lake Ponchatrain as it is?

I read that the levels of e coli and other bacteria are 100 x higher than acceptable safe levels for humans (basically the same as raw sewage), which is one of the main reasons NO is being evacuated...

I don't think I would be fishing in that lake any time soon if that is the case...

yes, last i heard it was goign back into the lake

first priority is drying out the city, then they can deal with decontamination...

ya, you really wonder if NO is really worth all this? especially if we are not going to commit the resources to making the levee safe.

they should move the city.

They really should. The coastline is being erroded at a horrendous rate simply b/c the Mississippi is being funneled into the gulf instead of being allowed to overflow its banks from time to time and deposit the silt that it used to. iirc the US is losing over an acre every day to the gulf b/c of this. (don't remember the exact stat).

If NO wasn't sitting there the levees could be removed and the water could again start to deposit the silt.

That's the simplistic idealistic answer, which of course isn't feasible.

You are totally missing the point of my question...

You have stories of the water being infested with bacteria...then you have stories of the water being pumped from the city into the lake...

I dont recall anything I have read (at least on the mainstream sites) that puts both together and states that this polluted water is being pumped directly back into the lake...

IMO, you would be giving alot of people way too much credit if you think that they would actually put these two together...

I won't be eating any seafood at all, just in case they're lying about where it came from. :p

It will eventually get there but it has to go into Lake Pontchartrain first.
