Nashville Power company shuts off widow’s service seven days after funeral because name wasn’t changed on account

The Chambers’ account was always up to date and paid in full. However, being a responsible customer seemed to grant them no leeway with the power company. On February 15th, the day after her husband of 57-years was buried, Ms. Chambers received a letter from NES telling her to contact them within seven days to change the name on the account.

"Instead of with compassion and kindness, her power was turned off." On the morning of February 21, NES shut off the power to Ms. Chambers’ home. Ms. Chambers’ recalled, “I saw the NES truck backing out of the drive and then he took off real fast.” The grieving process, the cold Tennessee February weather with no power and the stress of the past month Ms. Chambers had spent at her husband’s bedside as he dealt with cancer, led her to suffer a mini-stroke the day her electricity service was cut. "It was a senseless, needless act of cruelty, in my opinion," said Smith. “It’s actually inexcusable.”

wow that's bullshit. the lady had a ton of other things to deal with. 7 days in the event of a death? damn.

at least she got it on and the electric company is getting bad publicity.

She knew her husband was terminally ill. Why didn't she change the name before he passed? Seems to me like a case of poor personal responsibility.

The company shouldn't be so quick to change names after a death, but they reconnected the service a few hours later with no reconnect fee. Seems they made it right in the end.

I am pretty socially liberal but I don't see the problem. As said they knew he was terminally ill and they sent notice giving her time to make a simple phone call.

My grandmother passed and mom my switched the power to her name to give time to clean up and had the internet turned off right away. Its part of what you have to do when someone pass's away.

And yes they do it in 7 days as many would sit on a house and let the bill climb in a deceased persons name as they knew there was not enough in the estate to come after.

My Mom still has the phone listed in my Dad's name even though he passed in 1987. My voice is on her answering service. I guess she feels it gives the appearance that a man lives in the house rather than a widow.

Guess my state's law forbidding power cut offs in the Winter time is not universal.

Her husband of 57years...that would make her at leasts 75 years old if she was married at 18 years of age.....why do you always enter threads and crap on them with ignorant statements??

And? My grandmother was in her 80's and still paid her own bills, did her own shopping, etc...

Just because someone is 75 does not mean they are nuts or can't support themselves. And again they told her what to do, all she had to do was call or ask another family member or friend to help.
