First of all, don't call it a sport. I can play soccer. I can play football. I can play basketball (though I suck.) But can anyone 'play' NASCAR? Oh wait. I guess you can! Remember those fantasy games you used to play when you were 8 years old, and when you lost you'd change the rules in the middle of the game so you could win (usually ending with a brawl with your best friend?) I guess that's how you play NASCAR, change the rules in the middle of a fvcking 'race'. Also, when you were 8, didn't every game involve cheating? Well guess what folks...NASCAR LOVES CHEATERS!!! Everyone cheats...its so open you can't even doubt it. Trick fuel tanks, removal weights, etc. etc. How is this a real sport again?

Wasn't NASCAR supposed to be about 'stock cars'??? Nothing 'stock' about the current vehicles though. Hell, most of them are based on outdated models you can't even find at a dealership. Ricers are more authentic 'stock' than the piece of sh*t racecars in NASCAR. I'd rather *PAY* to see ricers race...no joke! At least they make left AND right turns! NASCAR should start over with small cars priced under $25,000 with max 2.5l 4-cylinder engines and max 12psi of boost. As stupid as it sounds it would make more sense (and be more entertaining) than the current setup.

Can you even call it a 'race'? Okay, we've all cracked the jokes about no right turns and going in circles. But a lot of good races are big ovals--take this weekend's Kentucky Derby for example. Of course, with the KD you don't have to sit there for hours watching horses run around 500 TIMES!!! And all those fans paying upwards of $100 per ticket get to watch 497 laps only to have the last laps raced at 55mph under a fvcking caution flag! So I wouldn't call it a race.

So the question remains...how/why does this make money?

I don't care what you think, I've been attending NASCAR races since before you were born and I love it.

If you don't get it, I can't explain it to you.

Hey, I like chicken and beer as much as the next guy, but I can get it elsewhere...

I think a lot of people love going because of the 'tradition' of going to the races, but that doesn't explain where all these new fans are coming from. Some of the most die-hard NASCAR fans I know are transplants in Charlotte from places like Long Island and Connecticut. WTF is so special about it?

you ever see any fat drivers? the drivers are under great physical strain in order to drive that much while experiencing the forces they feel. they work out to build muscle to help fight against g forces.

NASCAR is a sport.

Enough said.

it does require a lot of preparation and team work. there is more to the game than just the racing part. a lot happens before they even get to the track.

How do they cheat? Cars are strictly regulated to meet templates, and checked for any advantages. Trick fuel tanks? Removal weights? WTF?

Yeah, they aren't stock, but who wants to watch 43 stock Monte Carlos race around at 100 mph?

Not all races are ended under caution.

In an interview a few days ago Tony Stewart acknowledged that all the drivers work around the system..."we all bend the rules a bit..they can't check everything ya know".

Also, I never said modified stock wasn't an option. I can understand putting a 600+hp engine in the car, as long as the shell is stock.

1. i can play marathons, i can play gymnastics, i can play cycling.

2. you dont know who Gary Nelson. so if you think teams are cheating you dont know how motorsports work where the governing body levels the field all the time.

3. stock car = marketing. race on sunday, sell on monday. even if you dont like it its a smart way of making money who thinks their sedan is what they use in NASCAR. if you think a real stock car can hold up going around in circles go ahead and go watch your so called ricers.

4. new regulations dictated the yellow flag on sunday. you have 23 races left where you can watch them "race"

It makes money because NASCAR is smarter than stupid people like IRL and CART whose fans got sick of the drama and politics. it makes money because it follows the american idea of horsepower and torque... and what this country is known for... "more is better".

NASCAR gets a lot of flak for only turning left, so called "no talents" ...what about drag racing? they only go straight... they dont even turn. the races last less than 4 seconds. oh wait... you can't play drag racing.

i heard one of them say its our job to cheat and its their job to catch us... i dont know if you watch other racing series but all teams try to push regulations to their limits.

I don't even know why I'm bothering to reply to this but I'll do it anyway...

I'm not a fan of NASCAR and honestly I do find it boring to watch cars go around an oval over and over but I'd rather watch that than soccer. I don't participate in either but my guess is soccer takes more athletic ability and conditioning than NASCAR but that doesn't make it more interesting.

And *please* don't mention creating a "ricer racing circuit" ever again. I think "Fast & the Furious" has spawned more than enough "racecars" out of 120bhp 4 door Civic's by adding a bumble bee muffler and erector set wing. :disgust:

i dunno about fat drivers, but i do know that old drivers hang around and remain competitive a lot longer than they do in any other racing league, and longer than almost any other sport ('cept golf)

anyway, the only way that rant could have been better is if it was illustrated

robor, they have drifting for that.

NASCAR takes so much damn skill it isnt funny. it is probably the largest team game in the U.S. you cant have only one guy having a good day and still win, everyone has to have their best. i bet you couldnt make it 50 laps w/o a huge mistake on your part. the ability to last 3 hours in a car is insane that takes a lot of training.

isnt every sport about how far can you bend the rules w/o breaking them though?

NASCAR is a "sport" but its more entertainment than ne thing. my father watches it, and i will watch it sometimes.

I have driven a Nascar Nextel Cup style car, at the Richard Petty Driving Experience. I drove 8 laps around Nazareth Speedway, a 1 mile track. I can tell you from PERSONAL experience that it is NOT as easy as it looks on TV.

I only drove 8 laps around a 1 mile track and I was wornout from it. It is A LOT more physically demanding than you may think. My fastest speed was 114 MPH. There were only 2 other cars on the track, the instructor and another driver like me, single file.

Now, I couldn't even begin to imagine driving a superspeedway at 190+MPH with 41 other cars inches away on all sides for 3-4 hours. Hell, driving on the smaller tracks is even worse. To borrow an old fighter pilot saying, it's like a knife fight in a phonebooth. The level of physical and mental conditioning and CONCENTRATION needed is incredible. If you're not 100% in the car with your head at all times you are going to either stuff it into the wall or slam into someone else.

It may not be running around the field in little shorts kicking a ball like soccer, or slamming into some sweaty lineman like football, or even hitting a stupid little ball into a hole in the ground. But don't kid yourself and say it's not a sport. Anyone can run around kicking a ball, swing a golf club, or bang heads with some other ape on the gridiron.

But there are very few who could do what these guys do EVERY DAY (not just Saturday and Sunday) for 36 weeks. Until you have driven in their shoes, you have no room to talk.
