NASCAR, I don't get it

What's the appeal of NASCAR? I've heard arguments about the drivers being real athletes, the excitement, the concept of a team, etc. But I still don't understand the appeal.

1. How can you possibly know who is in the lead after a few laps? With other sports, at least you have a score.

2. The cars are nothing like street cars with the same name. The Ford Taurus is a joke, it is exactly the same as others except for the blue oval.

3. Why don't they give everyone identical cars from a lot and see who wins. It seems like there would be a lot more skill involved in driving an everyday car.

Can someone help me out?

are you serious about the "It seems like there would be a lot more skill involved in driving an everyday car." part? Yeah, a car limited to 110mph will be much tougher to drive at a 2 mile oval.

Why did you say just nascar, instead of all motor sports, since its obvious you like none of them. I dont like nascar, but i respect the fact that those guys drive a hell of a lot more than indy or F1.

To clarify, it would take much more skill to win, because an ordinary car has significant limitations, mainly handling at high speeds.

What I don't get is why a new thread to discuss this "issue" has to be started every two freaking days. If you don't like it, get over it, and don't watch or talk about it.

Or at least ask some real questions that might help you understand and appreciate it more instead of incredulous "questions" which really only indicate that you think it's stupid.

If you can't understand it on your own, don't even bother, usually the non-mechanically inclined have no clue what NASCAR or Drag Racing is about.

For us people who know the difference between an O2 sensor and a Oil Pressure Regulator there are these sports that test mechanical skill.

I don't like NASCAR myself anymore that they changed from being off the lot cars like the Datona 500's and Thunderbirds, but I do drag race for the reason's it's a fun thing to go out and do every 3 or 4 weeks and see how consistant I have made my vehicle and what increases in power I have made on my own with no help from a shop or something I bought off the lot.... you don't know the pleasure I get from beating the crap out of Audi's that are so overpriced they cost more then my truck with 100X the functions of those overrated things 😉

BTW there is a score... how do you think people get the Winston cup?

Edit: also the usual case of, "it's driving around in circles there is no skill" this is usually the arguement of children who play Gran tourismo or some ralley sport game and think that when they are 16 years old and take a corner that says "Limit 30" but they take it at 50 all of a sudden they think they have risen to some extreme racing class. "Oh man if I could only get my shot at Ralley, after all this practice on my playstation I'll be unstopable" 😉

Ummm... the car that's in front of everyone else is in the lead...

<< 3. it seems like there would be a lot more skill involved in driving an everyday car. >>

That's like saying you'd rather watch Joe Sixpack play Football (or whatever sport yer into) than pro athletes.

Now, I'm not a NASCAR fan (if I channel surf into an accident I'll watch for a few minutes but that's 'bout it) but at least I don't ask stupid questions...

By watching. At the race there is a leaderboard that shows the order of the cars

The series started out with actual stock cars, hence the name. It has evolved, just like every other sport.

That would be the IROC racing series. Although, the cars aren't exactly street cars.

I doubt it.

I'm not a huge fan of watching it on TV, but I go to the race in Michigan every June and it's alot of fun. We tailgate for like 4 days and the rush of air you feel after the pack passes you and the noise. It's alot of fun. We also sit in the front row, so we get more of the experiance. Go to a race once and you might understand.
