Why would they build another shuttle? Its a 25 year old design that many have been wanting to replace for awhile now? I agree that the space program must push on, but not with another shuttle.

If you think, 2 days after this tragedy, that a discussion on possible names for a replacement shuttle is any kind of place for "humor", then you are a disgrace to the Air Force R.O.T.C.

Question is, will they still fly the other shuttles? There are still 3 people in the space station looking for a ride...

Chill or skidaddle if you don't like it, man. I don't think anyone here is making light of recent tragic events, so cool your jets already.

I'd prefer to avoid the gay-sounding Star Trek names. Good ones would be "America" and "Freedom" (isn't the ISS named that?) and "Independence"; good patriotic names that promote America.

I guess if you were the skipper it would be the "S.S. Homophobe".

Hello! The Enterprise-A, anyone? :p

The Pathfinder is sitting in Huntsville, Alabama. A replica of it is at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex. The Enterprise is located at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

</nitpick>

But yeah, I agree with your point. Enterprise is overused.

I don't think naming a new shuttle (shuttle replacement) the America would be a good idea. For one, it's somewhat cheesy in a conceited kind of way, but can you imagine what kind of target for terrorism that would be? Also, while the X-33 looks like a good idea, they cancelled it for a reason. I think it would be more likely that we would see a replacement based more off of existing launch hardware.

Oh, I don't think the people making stupid suggestions are making fun of the tragedy, and I think it's just another thing that we'll always see in ATOT.

<sarcasm>
How about the Anandtech, or the Bukkake?

Other countries have vessels of their names.

Back on topic - another I like is John F. Kennedy. More than any other President, he is responsible for our space program.

The first new technology ship(not shuttle) to replace the shuttle should be named the JFK.

Really, like what? Generally countries don't want to put their name on any vessel just due to the possiblity of failure.

Not a bad idea.

Without risk only failure is possible. We have already named and retired the USS America(carrier).
