I'm not saying it was aliens, but...

Maybe they found the lost orbiter?
"Good news! The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter found the long-lost Mars Observer, when the two of them crashed into each other."

(We've lost quite a few things that have been sent to Mars.)

They mention someone on the the HiRISE team, the ridiculously-high-res camera on the MRO, so it'll probably be something that that probe spotted.

I must have traveled back in time or something since I recall them announcing this last month.

I find it funny that they make an announcement that they're going to make an announcement. Personally I think it wont be anything TOO surprising. Probably more confirmation that there used to be or is water on it. It's kinda always been plausible so while confirmation is good it's not anything out of this wor... Wait, I guess it is. :p

Now what would be really cool is if they found fossils of actual multi cellular organisms or perhaps some abundant minerals like iron, carbon, sillicon etc that would actually make it plausible to build there. Basically if you can establish a small dome where you can grow stuff and live, and have access to all those minerals so you can mine them, then you can continue to build more domes and buildings to build and establish further. Downside of such a colony though would be that you are depending 100% on man made structures to even survive.

Didn't they show they could 3D print strong concrete honeycomb blocks using just lunar dust?

I hope its a worthwhile announcement. I think proof of life or previous life is a stretch someone would have leaked that news.

They haven't even proven mars is real. We all know this is a government conspiracy.

My guess is that it will be disappointing in the sense that something like the unknown source of methane on Mars will be announced a result of geological activity and not aliens. :|

It will be something geological that is exciting to some people but for the average joe like us probably has little interest. Most likely some confirmation that water used to be on Mars, which we already suspect anyway.

Since there is already ice on Mars coming to the conclusion that there used to be water isn't much of a stretch. Maybe they found actual water that is there currently locked beneath the surface. That would be cool.

Yeah if it's truly amazing news we'd probably have heard more about it. This kind of vague hyperbole is just for hype.

The inclusion of Lujendra Ojha screams it's about water. He's the one who back about four years ago was able to use algorithms to remove distortion from satellite photos which lead to, what he concluded, were streaks caused by salt deposits from flowing water. They came and went in different photos.

I was hoping to find a funny picture of a drinking fountain on Mars, so I did a google image search of "martian drinking fountain". The results had a lot of segregated fountains from the 50s. Not sure how they decided that was what I was looking for. "I have no idea what you're talking about, but maybe this'll keep you busy for awhile" :^/

Maybe it was going by past searches? Something you need to tell everyone?

It happens all time, but from long experience, announcing your announcement is announcing that your announcement sucks.

I can't think of one instance where an announced announcement didn't suck

If it was actual big news, it would generate it's own attention. Trying to pre-hype is basically admitting that no one would normally care.
