Considering people pay millions of fucking dollars to fly into space, I'd say its a sweet deal.
Eh, think about it, some school admins make that type of money. I mean take a subject look at it, thats stupid as all get out.

NASA or random unified school district... what make the same?

I think you missed my point. A school admin doesn't fly on a multi-million dollar rocket into space.

That's just more reason they should be paid MORE.

Ok, let's try an example and maybe you will understand my point:

Let's say you really enjoy BUILDING HUTS. Now, suppose you found a job BUILDING HUTS, but it paid less than you could make doing something else. However, you still choose to work there because, to you, BUILDING HUTS is the thing you love more than anything else in the damn world and you would do it even if nobody paid you for it.

Now replace BUILDING HUTS with "flying in space," and then with "being a mid-level administrator in a large bureaucratic agency."

Which one makes more sense?

Look at the pay for these Navy SEALs! So low! I bet union auto workers make more than they do! Why don't they all just quit and become mid level administrators at high schools? Geez!

I understand your point, I don't agree with it.

By your logic people playing in sports should be paid via gum.

Excellent troll.

By your logic high school teachers should be paid with solid gold bricks.

That's part of the reason they are paid quite a bit.

They have to endure a lot on a good day, and they have to endure hell if anything goes wrong.
Space walks, possible radiation hazards, physical and psychological stresses of constant exposure to zero-g environment, etc etc.. oh, and they get there strapped on top of a massive fucking rocket.

Does that sound worthy of low pay.

It's a lot of short sweet fun moments followed by what is likely some of the worst anxiety, constant stresses, brutal training, and insane levels of risk.

Yes, because the business card alone is worth the job.

Do they take actors? I can act very good like I'm on a Moon or something.

I can also keep secrets. :sneaky:

Maybe they need to fly one last rocket, they probably forgot people in the ISS.

In all seriousness, isin't there people in there now? How exactly does this work, if there's no actual space shuttle program? What if there's an emergency or something?

That plus the salary listed on usajobs
I'm not arguing they should make more than that, but definitely not any less than that.

It's also right in line with other government jobs based on the GS payscale system. You figure astronauts are highly intelligent, trained nonstop, and in general have to do a lot to fulfill their end of the bargain. That's right up there with the GS-10/11/12/13 folk.

Oh, hey! Why look at that, I just looked at that usajobs astronaut page again and read the detail of the pay... appears they have a starting salary of GS-11.

Standard salary for a position at that payscale, and I'd most certainly argue their jobs would put them at no less than a GS-11 position based on their requirements and duties.
Again, a NASA spaceflight is no walk in the park, nor would any astronaut ever argue it's entirely fun. They have fun moments and have to be able to have fun when they have downtime, but it's a ton of high-stress work in sub-optimal environments with no supervisor to hold your hand if you fuck up (and no supervisor to guide you if something goes very wrong and you lose comms).

They are put on an appropriate GS-payscale, and make what other government employees at that pay scale would make (and the same the astronauts would make if they happened to transfer into a different, non-flight related GS-11+ job).

Uhhh.... Russia?

That's exactly how it's happening now. All manned spaceflights with US astronauts are currently being handled by the Russians through their space program.

When we go back to the future and use the "we're literally riding on top of a fucking massive rocket" style launch vehicles, we'll then, of course, resume handling our own manned orbital missions (and hopefully get back to pushing to the moon (and beyond!)).

You know, I think I would actually sign up for that if I was guaranteed to actually land on Mars.

Pros: First man to walk on mars
Cons: First man to die on mars

Two entries into the history books...

Sadly, it will be the first of many deaths on Mars, as the Doom prophecies go by the great John Carmack.

Hmm did not figure we'd be depending on another country. What if they decide to shut their program too? LOL I'm guessing there's special agreements in place and what not though.

The program was paused not long ago when a rocket carrying cargo to the station... failed. Thankfully no one was on it, but it delayed travel to and from the station while the Russians figured out what went wrong.

I believe I posted a thread regarding a one way trip to Mars a while back. Some researcher proposed sending automated crafts with supplies, food, water, equipment, etc, then sending a manned craft on a one way trip. I don't think they'd have any shortage of volunteers.
