Read the story. One of the cameras found a piece of debris falling off the external fuel tank during the launch.
 
Stuff falls off all the time, it's normal. The piece that fell off the tank did not make contact with the orbiter.
Things falling off is nothing new. Yes it's always cause for concern, but I think the media is overhyping every little thing a bit too much.
 
kinda makes you hope the crew doesn't have internet access from space.

Commander gets up in the morning, flips on his computer to check the news... "WTF the fleet is grounded!!?!?!!"

Just because was considered normal in the past doesn't make it acceptable now. The media didn't ground it, the director did. Give the folks at Nasa a bit of credit. Nobody wants to see these things fly more than they do. I'd be willing to be they no a wee bit more of what is acceptable and isn't than anyone posting on this board.

They should ground the damn things permanently. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for space exploration, both manned and unmanned. But the space shuttle is an aging piece of junk that never did what it was supposed to in the first place (be reusable). For a very nice essay on this, see:

I have no idea what you're talking about. It's a perfectly readable light-grey on black for me, in both Firefox and IE.

Try READING. This piece did NOT hit the shuttle. The last shuttle "blew up" because a piece of foam HIT the shuttle.
