It's basically an attempt to create "robot skin". It can sence something comming close to it and react appropriately. I think using a balerina was a poor choice, but it demonstrates how the robot is able to stay our of her way.

Rather typical design for the most part.

I worked for that guy Lumelsky for a while when I started grad school. I remember seeing that robotic arm sitting in his lab space... Smart guy, but kind of an ahole.
