NASA will make a major announcement today at 4 p.m. EDT regarding the return of human spaceflight launches to the United States. The agency will make the announcement during a news conference from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The event will be broadcast live on NASA Television and the agency's website.

A brief question-and-answer session with reporters on site will take place during the event. Media will be able to ask more detailed questions related to the program in a teleconference shortly afterward.
News conference participants at Kennedy are:
- NASA Administrator Charles Bolden
- Kennedy Space Center Director Bob Cabana
- Commercial Crew Program Manager Kathy Lueders
- Astronaut and former ISS Expedition crew member Mike Fincke

About time.

The CCDev program?

I support it but I am not going to get excited for them to waste more taxpayer dollars on their cronies.

 Um, the decision to end the Space Shuttle program was made during the Bush administration.

I'm going to assume you're just trolling though and not actually a moron.

The space shuttle has nothing to do with anything. The space shuttle was an aging piece of shit and needed to be replaced.

Rumour is they are going with Boeing over SpaceX

There is no rumour. There is a fight between 3. Last I checked, Sierra Nevada was very much still in the game. The obvious other 2 being Boeing and SpaceX. That's all anyone knows. There is no clear winner.

My wifey works on the inside :sneaky:

Might as well go for the Dream Chaser since that is probably the program that needs the funding the most.

Seriously. The space shuttle was cool and all, but it failed its mission miserably.

Like a failure in every single metric and met almost none of its design goals.

Oh, at first I thought this was about the whole other program (the heavy launch vehicle or whatever it's called the big rocket, and the Orion [?] crew capsule) that I thought was fairly known for a while (although I don't know if it was officially announced hence why I thought that's what this was about).

This sounds like it's basically going to be a giant middle finger to Russia over the shit they've been pulling. Talking about how if the US wants to get to ISS they should get a trampoline, claiming the end of the ISS is related to the political BS over Syria and Ukraine stuff (it wasn't, the stuff they said had already been planned on years before, they distorted a lot of shit because the Russian government is being full on shitbags), and then the recent move for the training facility back to Crimea (essentially trying to force the US to send astronauts to Crimea so that Russia could act like the US recognizes Russian control over it).

The space shuttle has nothing to do with anything. The space shuttle was an aging piece of shit and needed to be replaced.

It has nothing to do with anything? Considering it was the last NASA vessel that the US performed manned spaceflight in, I'd say it has something to do with the topic of NASA run manned spaceflight.

It certainly wasn't perfect but I don't consider it a piece of shit. It did need replaced, but it wasn't so pressing that we couldn't have kept on for a bit longer so that we wouldn't end up stuck dealing with Russia's bullshit.

Using the CCDev before the SLS and MPCV were ready has been the plan for years now.

Well Boeing gives more "donations" and its an election year so I give them the edge. Mind you their bid will come in lower but of course run way over budget in the end and have issues as well.

If they're going to contract with a private company I'd bet dollars it will be Boeing. How much money has SpaceX contributed to congressional coffers? Boeing has been at it for years and years.

NASA building a rocket to nowhere imo.

Anyway the Big Announcement is;

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -

Both Boeing & SpaceX are expected to be awarded contracts this afternoon by NASA to take U.S. astronauts to and from the International Space Station starting in 2017, according to a source in the space industry.

And maybe a trip to a comet.
