As the title says, NASA is expected to make a large announcement. Personally I'll be tuned into NASA's live feed around that time:

http://www.nasa.gov/55644main_NASATV_Windows.asx

So, what do you think it will be?

UPDATE: As many of you have seen on other sites, this is no longer about life in the solar system. Doesn't seem nearly as fun now :(

I'll update the poll a little bit to reflect the change :)

I'm going with proof of life in the past, multi-celled, because I believe this is a lot easier to prove than the other things.

3-7 p.m. EST: Live Interviews on Cassini Mission

Is that it? Doesn't sound very exciting. If it was major, wouldn't other news outlets have picked something up by now?

Nasa has never made a good announcement in my opinion so I figure it'll be the usual single cell life on Mars from like 50 bazillion years ago when no one cared.

While I was in San Diego last week, I sat in the hottub with two rocket scientists who are actually engineers on the solid rocket boosters.

Anyway, they told me that NASA will be ditching the shuttle in 2008 in favor of Apollo-like rockets/capsules.

I bet NASA will announce a few launches slated for 2006-2007 and then the end of the shuttle program.

I voted for proof of past multi cellular. This is dis-heartening because I want instant gratification -- meaning present life (preferrably intelligent)! Oh well, I'll take what the universe throws at me, though.

The announcement is going to go something like this:

After several years of exhaustive study of our solar system, we have been able to determine that there is life out there. Recently, a probe has sent back conclusive proof that life does currently exist within our own solar system. It has been discovered on the third planet in distance from the sun. It has not yet been determined whether or not life on this planet is or is not intelligent...

The original news article was a goofup. Thay changed from:
NASA is planning to make a huge announcement today, about possible life in our own solar system.

Exact details of what we can expect to hear have not been released. We do know that evidence has been found that could point to life relatively close to the earth.

Official word is expected this afternoon at 2 p.m. We'll have complete coverage of today's big news when it is released. Tune to News 13 for the complete story.

Where is the "Who really cares?" option?

Is there life out there somewhere? Probably.

Does it affect us here on earth? Hardly.

drudge report says they found liquid water on a freaking cold planet.

Enceladus [en-SELL-ah-dus] is one of the brightest objects in our solar system. Covered in water ice that reflects sunlight like freshly fallen snow, Enceladus reflects almost 100 percent of the sunlight that strikes it. Because Enceladus reflects so much sunlight, the surface temperature is extremely cold, about -201° C (-330° F).
