In a meeting with USA TODAY's editorial board, Griffin said NASA lost its way in the 1970s, when the agency ended the Apollo moon missions in favor of developing the shuttle and space station, which can only orbit Earth

i dont think so

He's not saying they weren't good, he's saying that instead of limiting ourselves to earth orbit that we should have developed a more far reaching craft.

I can't believe that he said such an idiotic thing, seeme he forgets how many of the missions were a sucess for science and it seems he forgot the role the shuttle played in the cold war, military missions. The shuttle gave us a platform to use for launching satellites far larger than any other vehicle could carry. We need to continue and advance in space. Time to get the shuttles replacement in operation now.

I'm not saying you're wrong (by any means) but the shuttle isn't the space craft that carries the heaviest payload. (the appolo rockets carried more weight, and went further, they simply weren't reusable, and were designed for a different purpose)

What ticks me off is that we stopped developing a better vehicle.

Instead we spend billions fighting phoney wars.

couldn't agree more. Lets give our entire military budget to NASA  Or maybe just the money we spend on developing new nukes 🙂 ...

I wonder what NASA would do if their budget suddenly increased a hundred fold..... mmmmmmmm the spacy goodness.

Well considering what we have in use, the Saturn V has not been in use since skylab.😀 We can put a shuttle up.
