Hello everyone,
I would like to buy low end NAS server. I am looking for the best value for my money.

Can anyone describe me difference between these 2 nas servers?

D-Link DNS-327L
Zyxel NSA325 V2

I will use it with 1x WD Red 2TB, I will add second one later.

The price is basically same, but I am not sure which one I should choose.

note: if you will think that there is better option in this price range, just write it:)

if you are going to spend that much why dont you take a look at the synology NAS? I have a DS213j for over a year and 0 issues, i really like their software, i think they have a better brand recongnition at least in the NAS area.

Very low end is the QNAP TS-212. I have 2 of these and they work well. They are slow (as in around 35MB/sec transfer rate). I use them for remote back up so my upload/download speed is always the bottle neck anyway. Price new is ~$100.

A step up in performance but similar in price is the used QNAP TS-x39 ProII. You'll get solid performance of 80 MB/sec transfer rate.

Synology DS213j is a solid performer @$200 price range.

The Synology DS215j is now out. Upgrades over the 213j:

1.2 GHz --> dual-core 800 MHz
2 x USB 2.0 --> 1 x USB 2.0 and USB 3.0

The CPU upgrade should improve GUI performance and transfer speed. The USB 3 speeds up local backups. (I use an external drive as a secondary backup for my NASes.)

Get a Synology, you won't regret it. I've been through several brands and I am overly happy with my DS214.

What are those brands if I may ask?

qnap, homebuilt with various OS's and some lower off brands I don't recall the name of. But once cry once has been my way lately and don't regret it.

Synology video station/ds video won't play nice with DTS sound track - license issue. DSM (synology) download station can't use proxy.

Hmmm... It used to, but I never use DS video anymore. I just use a player that supports DTS, and access the files via SMB.

Eg. On iOS I use Infuse Pro. They licenced DTS.

Infuse doesn't have the GUI of ds video, plex, xbmc etc. I dislike the smb file browser type of player.

I installed ffmpeg on my synology to work around the DTS issue. I also use plex however plex does not support caption as good as ds video.

If you haven't try ds video for a while. Give it another try. I can't recommend infuse pro for new user. $10 is a little much compared to plex $5.0 or ds video ( free)

How often do you replace/upgrade your NAS? I have a 2 year old DS213 Synology. Wondering if it's worth replacing for newer/faster tech in a 415+ model
