Question NAS OS suggestions

I have a DIY homeserver which is more of a NAS. First I was using WHS2011 and then WSE2016. I have used these because they are Windows based and allow remote access of the files. The OS is installed on its own drive. I have another 4x4TB drives for storage of basics - music, photos, videos, documents. I have another 2TB drive for backup of my desktop PC.
I hear that WSE will be going away in the not too distant future so I am anticipating having to change my OS again. Is there a non-Windows based OS that will allow me to simply use my 4TB HDDs without having to change the file system for my data storage? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

What's wrong keep using WSE2016? Windows products that were discontinued does't mean that they will stop working.

Using different file system on different platform is never a good idea. Performance will always get a hit.

Going away means... No more MS official support.

In case of a server it does not matter much. The only concern could be Security which can be achieved (if needed) by using inexpensive, or free 3rd party applications.
