NAS or file sharing question

I'm a big noob, so bear with me.

I want to be able to setup a NAS or something to that tune which will hold my music, videos and photos without burdening my laptop.

is there a way i could access those files when i'm travelling? I'd like to keep the NAS at home in the U.S. and be able to connect to the internet somewhere else and have access to those files.

is that possible?
