Background -

I am currently working on building a new PC. Right now I have 6 Hard Drives (400GB each) - which my computer makes a whole lotta heat under my desk. Because of this I am going to try and move some things around to cool things down and simplify.

Now my point -

One thing I was thinking about doing is getting a DMS-602 DLINK Storage (click HERE!)

My thought was remove the HDD, assuming it was a normal IDE drive and replace it with a bigger one say 400GB :) - I need to know if anyone has one of these or had seen one and know is there some type of special software or anything on these drives? Does anyone think I can just remove and upgrade the HD on this? I like DLINK because it will match my other DLINK hardware - but if someone knows anything about maybe the Buffolo Tech NASA servers which have the same type of thing that I could do this too? I want to jam it with the biggest HDD available.

Ok thoughts?!.........

You are taking a chance that you can swap out the drive on that....

Here's an alternative... and lower cost solution. Look at one of these with one or two externall enclosures... I'm running one with a 200 and 250 mirrored to each other.

Linksys USB Nas. LinkSys NAS

Yeah I was thinking about that route. However like I said I wanted to do less parts - less heat etc. The DLINK will link into my system and match up nicely. I dont want to have now TWO extra things attached. Doing some research it does look like it will be just a normal HD. The largest storage is a buffalo (ATM that I can find) 300gb for around $432 - I really want 400GB.

well... the kinksys tops out at two 300 gig and has problems with WD drives... but I had one working in it.

It adds cables and boxes, but at a fraction of the cost.

Does no one have one of these? I just wondering if I can toss a larger replacement drive in it and need some feedback if someone has done it.

hmm was thinking of making a file server too like what you want to do.. Have you thought about possibly using an old computer or buy a really cheap one and attaching HD's to it?
