Question NAS home system for windows / android / apple access

Currently messing about with multiple 4TB WD USB passports for home backups of mainly photographs, videos and music.

Whats the best way to get this onto a shared NAS that my wife can access and backup through apple and myself through windows and android?

I have a couple old desktops but I can find anyone recommending that route so i think its time to spend money on a better solution. Currently hording about 2TB of data.

Depending on the speed and power of your spare desktop, you could turn it into a freenas or something similar. I know we had a rig set up as a freenas at my last workplace, and it did the job nicely.
