NAS HDD - buying advice needed

Hi!

I need to purchase an internal HDD for my Synology home server as one of the current drives has crasched.

I'm looking at WD Red, WD Red Pro (comes with a 5 year warranty) and the Seagate NAS and Enterprise NAS series (also 5 yr warranty). My plan is to go for a HDD with a 4TB capacity.

I'm no expert so I'd like to know is if there's any reason not to pick a HDD with a 5 year warranty, if price is not an issue?

Thanks in advance

WD red pro is 7200rpm. If speed isn't too much of a concern I would probably just choose a normal wd red. They'll probably run cooler for you.

Hi rchunter and thanks for your input!

I keep photos, music and videos on my NAS and stream content to my TV and stereo regularily.

Would you say that the difference in temperature would be noticeable? How about noise, would there be a noticeable difference between a Red and a Red Pro HDD?

Also I'm curious about the stability of a 4TB HDD vs a HDD with less capacity. I've heard it would be safer to pick a drive with a proven "track record" to be on the safe side.

Thanks!

For what you're needing the regular red is plenty. Red pro would run a few degrees hotter, especially in a small synology box. 4tb red has a good track record. I haven't heard of any problems. fyi i've had 10 4tb reds running in my server for over a year now. No problems with any of them. I would have no problems buying the 6tb red's either. Since you have a small synology box with very limited drive bays I would definitely consider getting the larger 6tb drives.

What are you doing with your NAS?

Even if price isn't an issue, I think shelling out extra for a 5-year warranty and and 7200 RPM (vs. 5400 or 5900 for the Red Pro) is probably a waste of money if you're doing things like serving up media content or backing up devices. The only read advantage of 7200 RPM is slightly better random read/write performance, but unless you're actually running a workload that can benefit from it, that's a wash.

The warranty could be nice, but ask yourself this: if the drive fails in 4-5 years (the additional warranty period on a red-pro vs. a red) will you really want to replace it with a refurbished 4 TB drive? If capacities continue to climb, and prices continue to fall, it's entirely possible that the replacement value to the end user in the additional warranty period approaches 0. WD has certainly factored in the cost of the additional warranty in the cost of the drive, you're already paying for it up-front.

You're probably right, words of wisdom.

Anybody who can explain the difference between WD NASWare 2.0 and 3.0 and how Seagates NAS HDD's NASworks compares?

I have a WD Red for my media server, no problems with the speed or heat. It seems like Seagate has some issues with their reliability right now.

Ok, so decided to go with the WD red 4TB drive (the 3 yr warranty model) yesterday. And I feel comfortable with that decision. Thanks everyone for helping me decide!

Cheers!
