NAS enclosure

I am looking for a NAS enclosure to put my 300GB PATA drive in.

What is a good cheap enclosure out there?

Whatever you do, avoid Netgear's Storage Central NAS devices. Crap!

What I have found is that any "good" NAS is going to cost you. Expect to pay at least $300 for anything useable, more like $800+ for something that works properly. Read lots and lots of comments; there is a lot of info out there.

I gave up and decided to just get an Apple Airport Extreme when I really need NAS (it has a USB port you can hook a drive up to)

I got it!!! Finally!

A few years ago, I was snowboarding a day after a huge snowstorm. The snow was powdery. I was tired and was just resting on my butt before I hit the slopes. Then I saw a kid eating snow (I don't blame him, it was white powder!!!) Then a random person carves down and stops and tells the kid, "hey kid, don't eat yellow snow..."

So I used that as my signature ever since. Finally, I see that line should be credited to Frank Zappa.

Got in a day or so in boarding on Sugar Mountain but it's too wet since it got warm the last few days . . .

If you give us an idea of your I/O demands and future expansion needs that would be great. It may be best for you to consider a single IDE enclosure with USB2 connect for your 300GB PATA. Then in the future you may want to consider a multi-bay eSATA/NAS box (assuming you go all-SATA in the future).

Long-term it may be cheaper for you to find an inexpensive used PC and roll your own. Pop a SATA controller in the box if necessary - and a gigaLAN card if you need the thru-put.
