Narrowed down, which is better?

The main thing with gaming is actually resolution. The G1 has a higher resolution screen (WSXGA+ instead of WXGA+) which could be better for viewing area and such. I'd go for the G1 just because of the smaller size and if you ever needed a larger screen, hook up an external monitor.

Well the G1s has the same amount of power in a smaller package at a higher resolution, there isn't much disadvantage to it compared to the 17" model, unless you want more physical screen size.

What do you think of this as compared to an Alienware configured with a 512mb 7950 GTX (performance wise)

The 7950GTX is much bit faster than the 8600GT, but it won't play DX10 games. If you don't care about that, then go for it (assuming cost isn't an issue).

The advantages of DX10 are debated at length elsewhere, just check the video and PC gaming forum if you need more info.

Personally I'd stick with the 8600GT and a cheaper system, but that's because I don't play a lot of games and have a desktop for that.
