Watched the first ep yesterday. Good show with one annoyance; it's heavily subtitled. I like to websurf while watching TV. Unless you speak Spanish this show demands your primary attention.

^ This. I enjoyed the first episode but I watched it late at night. Late night reading puts me to sleep. If it weren't for all the vicarious blow I did watching the show I'd have passed out.

on episode 2, does the voiceover from the beloved patriot ever stop? i can't take it anymore.
The narration is the bestest part. It gives you a break from the subtitles. Why can't they just have everyone speak in English with Spanish accents. You can imagine that everyone is speaking Spanish w/o having to read 10 hours worth of subtitles. It's called using your imagination. :colbert:

I finished episode 8 last night... two more to go. I was only part way through the first episode and I was already hooked. Man... what an extremely well-done series. Acting, story, characters, EVERYTHING.

I think it's the most superbly done TV series I've ever seen (which includes Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc).

On Episode 8 now. This is a fantastic series top to bottom. It's hard for me to find much to criticize, but if I had to it'd be the slightly forced and awkward exchanges between Pablo and some of his "partners" or family where they try to "talk some sense" into him.

But seriously, this kind of show is why Netflix can get by on more original programming and less shitty movies.

Again, my biggest complaints are the historical accuracy and omission of key factors in the country's mentality to ignore what Escobar was doing.

Other than that, I thought it was done well. The acting was good, the dialog was pretty good.

lol what? It's not difficult at all to get immersed in subtitles. The brain takes over and I barely even realize that the show is mostly in Spanish.

Finished 2 episodes so far and love it. Would keep watching more, but waiting for the wife :)

In the opening scene of episode 2 there is a plane with winglets. However, commercial planes did not have them in the 80s. How could anyone watch such a horribly inaccurate show!

I'm not sure what you mean but I think they tried to address that with the references to 'magical thinking' - not sure that's the exact phrase. They seemed to bring it up mainly in connection with Escobar but maybe the attempt was broader and I just missed it.

They completely skipped a lot of what really happened. Escobar's prison was empty when they "stormed" it, so that was completely fabricated for TV. They only touched on Escobar as a folk hero. He WAS. He had the Columbian national team (the pride of the country) visit him in prison to play friendly games. He financed soccer leagues and it is suspected the national team. This had a major impact. In the '94 World Cup Columbia was trying to show the world they weren't just some drug cartel's pet project team. The poverty and violence was actually under control when Escobar enforced his truce.

Escobar also didn't have to push very hard to get his way with the government. They were willing to negotiate, regardless of the "American writer influence" we get in the show. This notion that we (the US) never negotiates with terrorists is just stupid. Sure we do, but we call it something else.

It doesn't help I know about a lot of this. And, besides all the historic stuff, I liked the show. It had good dialog, believable situations and acting, and was well done.

Good show so far.

A few cringes at the expected violence.

As far as the historical accuracy. Well, it is a drama show, first and foremost.I try to ignore the fact that it really is quite 'loosely' based on reality.

I thought they covered the folk hero part pretty well myself, it was the whole reason that he ran for congress to begin with. And they mentioned the soccer players coming to the prison, along with the hookers, officials etc.

I guess they didn't really dwell on it, would have slowed things down a lot I imagine.

Finally have gotten the wife into it, she is most of the way through but can only take so much at once.

It's not a documentary. It's a drama inspired by true events. There are several characters that did not exist and/or had their names changed.
