So I saw "The Social Network" last night and was confused for the longest time, thinking that "Sean Parker" was an alias used for "Shawn Fanning" because perhaps the latter did not want his real name used in the film. Well, I came home to read on Wikipedia that Sean Parker is a separate person and co-founder of Napster.

I was at GA Tech between 1998-2002 and got to experience the Napster phenomenon as a college student myself. Wild times! And I always associated Shawn Fanning as the "King" of Napster and for last decade have had NO idea who Sean Parker is.

Am I the only one or was Sean Parker more the "household" name that Shawn Fanning was?

Parker is my hero. Napster, and Facebook, as well as getting tossed for cocaine possession.

Neither one was a household name for me, and I was in a tech college during that time. The only time I remember that the names came up was when Lars started his whole anti-napster crusade, and later when the riaa got all pissy.

I think people in my school were more worried about getting 0-day movie and album releases from IRC than messing with napster too much.

Uh, I've never heard of Parker until this thread. Napster has always been associated to Shawn from every article or interview I've seen in the past.

Yeah,
It is not exactly explained everywhere how the Parker guy "founded" the Napster. I know that Fanning coded Napster. So how exactly Parker came into the picture, I am not sure...What was his role? How did the Parker and Fanning meet?
This information is not available. So I guess we have to take Parker's word for it...
Edit: Found this:

So, the Parker guy is a brilliant marketer/peddler.

He is also rich as hell, will be a billionaire when Facebook goes public next year. Something Fanning is not. With all tech things, there are the coders, and there are the business people. Parker was the business person, Fanning was the coder.
