who is going to pay them off??? HMM??

you are... napster has no money to pay them off. They are banking that everyone will start paying to use their service.

(hint napigator: free)

<< The annual payment of $200 million would come out of projected subscription fees and other potential sources of revenue. The company gave a few new details on just what those fees would look like. A service allowing limited numbers of downloads per month would likely cost between $2.95 and $4.95 per month, while an unlimited download service would likely cost $5.95 to $9.95, Barry said. >>

There goes the user base...

napigator sucks ? ? ?
did you forget to pop your anti-psychotic medication this morning. after napster
dies and takes all her servers into history, napigator will remain and thrive.
there will be dozens upon dozens of non-napster servers that will continue
to offer zero cost music file sharing, some of which lie virtually untouchable
overseas.

Bah napster...only programs you'll ever need: WinMX and Direct Connect. WinMX connects to third party napster servers...you can be connected to and search through multiple servers at once.

yup now that the base of music is established, you're going to see an underground split occur.

the real pirates will take to the napigator and other utilities to use other irc err napster servers, and not pay a dime. The servers can exist and do exist now.

The rest of the folks, i guess will either give up napster, share it(!!), or pay the bill.

If they think 20% of their current userbase are going to pay, well, then they must be seriously wrong.

Like the rest of the web, we get our stuff for FREE. If anandtech started charging money to use their web site?

what would happen?

it would die.

The business folks who think napster will make a man rich, are seriously whacked in the head.

man, still going with that subscription crap... = P ... i think the idea is okay if napster keeps a fast server database, but peer-to-peer, that means we pay to DL off people who can cut off downloads and refuse to share and stuff... that sucks...

so, Napigator WILL still exist even if Napster's software and everything Napster was banished from this universe?
