If the RIAA thinks this will increase CD sales, they are nuts. People have had a taste of this for a long time now. It will just mutate into another form or people will just not buy as much music anymore. Hell, you hit 22 to 25 yrs old and you almost stop buying CDs anyhow.

I Wish the recording companies would reduce the price of CD's rather than going after Napster. That way more people might actually buy CD's. They're spending too much time and resources by hunting down Napster.

How true :) I'm 26, and I've bought maybe 4 CDs in the last 2 years... and no, I don't continually use Napster for creating my own CDs. In fact, I run Napster 98% of the time as a server to share over a gig of non-copyrighted (bootleg) material of my favorite band...

I agree, last thing I bought was Dave Matthews' "Before These Crowded Streets". I just don't feel like spending much money on CDs anymore.

yeah, right. good luck with that one. they have trouble enough filtering out users sharing a SINGLE BAND (Metallica). think they'll be able to permanently weed out everybody?! umm yeah.

Screw bands like that.. I have a non shared folder for things I don't put up.. One's a 125 meg song that people with .5 k transfer speeds seem to love, one's Whoop There it IS because some guy on a really really slow connection one day really wanted that song from me, and I have ONE metallica song, no dre, no whoever else.

I haven't bought things in years because if I feel like blowing 15 bucks in a store it'll be on a dvd or bargain PC software. Music? I hear it a bunch of times and thanks to the radio playing it to death, I don't need nor want the song anymore. I just use napster for trance/techno stuff that I can't find in the store anyway, and even if I did I doubt it'd be the "big" record labels that would benefit.

If they shut down napster and expect CD sales to increase 800x they're sadly mistaken.

same here:) that stuff you cant find in any cd store, all you find there is the crap music. These tracks are made sometimes straight from the vinyl. :)

I actually used to buy CD's, but I refuse to further contribute to the RIAA -- why would I want to contribute to a group that screws the artists and price gouges the consumer to boot? They aren't ever getting another penny from me. I'll download the stuff from somewhere or not listen to it.

Maetryx here,

I didn't buy my first CD until I was 20 or so. And no, I didn't stop when I turned 22 or 25. I run napster a lot, and I buy a lot of CDs. My deal with MP3's is that I record them to minidisc and play them in my car. But I *still* buy a lot of music. Napster probably makes me buy more music. Stuff I woulnd't have heard of otherwise.

Thank you Maetryx

You're comments are exactly the type I want RIAA to hear. Maybe they will get their heads out of the sand and realize what you are saying is true about many people. And, people who don't want to pay for music will still have the option of burning a copy of a friend's CD if they want the music.

The RIAA is all about control. If they truly cared about copyrights the artists would always retain theirs -- ever look at the (C) on your CD? Who's name do you see there? The record company's of course. Then just last year they tried to sneak in legislation that would increase their control over artist copyrights -- luckily that got knocked down after someone found out about it. The RIAA is suck on so many levels.

Now I'm not advocating stealing. I'll gladly start buying music again if I can get it at a fair price direct from the artists. I don't watch MTV, I don't listen to the radio, I don't need marketing to push pop in my face....I don't need the RIAA. Just the music. Feed me.

My sentiments exactly. I agree with just about everything you guys are saying here. :)

I haven't used Napster in a while, but when I want to hear a song, which I'm pretty sure the band wouldn't mind, I'll download it and play it. When I'm sick of it, I'll just delete it. Where's the crime in that?

If the band has a problem with me listening to their music that way, then they can say so and I'll respect them; otherwise I'm not going to listen to some clods telling me not to listen to music.

Well, the news here stated Napster may start screening today. Believe me, if this happen, you'll find more and more warez sites offer tons of copyrighted songs.

What I wanna know is, where is the big price drop we were suppose to see in CD prices once they got established. Aren't they established yet? I would think it would cost them more to produce cassettes that they sell cheap.
