Napster and Cable Modems

I just got my cable modem but I can never get a fast download on Napster. I have my speed set to cable, and I only download from cable or higher, yet all I ever get is 30-40K downloads. I know my connection is up to speed because I have downloaded files from other places at 240K.

Thanks

p.s. I do have the Speed Guide patch for Win98.

It doesn't matter what your system is set to, you're still bound to the limits of the computer you're connecting to and the limits of every point in between. I don't know a lot about Napster personally but there can also be caps on the download speed so you won't suck up a huge chunk of someone else's bandwidth.

That's like saying I've put a bigger exhaust on my car why can I run as fast as a Diablo?? You're still constrained by the rest of the car.

It all has to do with the computer's connection you are downloading from. Just look for computers with T1s or T3s........if you are getting 30-40, either they are restricting what they can send out or you are connecting to DSL accounts because that's usually their upload limit.

Don't believe everyone either. A lot of people lie about their connections on napster. I find if you go w/14.4 modems that have a lot of songs that person will more than likely will be a good person to download from.

hubbs is right, remember there are ALOT of people that use napster. I'm willing to bet that half of them are computer illiterate. Those fools probably think Cable means you have Cable TV.

i think a lot of what you guys said was right (people lying or not knowing what their true connect speeds are, heavy loads, etc.) because i have been getting good results lately. just grabbed one file at 135KB/sec. Not too shabby considering I was getting 3.0 KB last week with my dial up. :)

I usually just follow the ping as a scale.

14.4 and your ping is 50? Riiiiiight.

The best I've gotten has been around 150k/sec. The worst has been about .01k :) And don't you just love it when people download off you at less than 1k a second? I feel bad because they're on a modem, but on a modem you can get between 3-5k.

Actually people intentionally lie about their connection so that they don't get bombarded by downloaders.

I'm on a T1 yet, I display my speed as 28.8. It keeps a managable amount of people connected to me, and overall everyone is happy.
