Napster alternatives

I got banned from Napster for having having some Rage mp3's, so I'm looking for a similar program. What's the best alternative to Napster (especially since it's going down anytime now)?

Personally, as a Napster alternative, I like IRC for mp3's and other sorts of things. Though I've been an IRC buff for years. I love it. mIRC

If you like Napster, use the same thing....Napigator.

Napigator is not the same thing. Napigator is simply a tool for Napster users to select their own servers instead of letting Napster do it for them. If you are banned from Napster, I doubt that napigator will keep you going. 'sides... isn't Napster ordered to shutdown anyway? That means napigator goes with it.

I downloaded Audiogalaxy a couple of weeks ago. It will never let me log on a new account. I would like to try it out, but that little thing is a bit irriating.

Audiogalaxy is great. I don't think they're allowing any new ones on or something. My friend tried recently and couldn't get on but I got on ages ago. I prefer it to most because you choose the songs you want and then the Satellite does everything else.

napigator will let you connect to servers not part of the napster network, thus you retain the familar interface, plus there are many large and fast servers to choose from so selection is rarely an issue. Gnutella is a great option but suffers from a bloated and overcongested network... getting any speed from it whatsoever is very unlikely... scour, cutemx, hotline, all the p2p clones are fairly decent... have used any myself in a while but they're worth checking out... audiogalaxy.com and oth.net are also good web based alternatives....

Madthumbs you don't understand how Napigator or Napster work. You're only banned from Napster once you connect to a Napster server, thus by bypassing the Napster servers onto an OpenNap server you're not banned anymore. In any case, it's a very quick regedit run to create a new username and become unbanned again.

And if Napster goes down, Napigator lets you connect to other servers not run by Napster, so you'll be able to get mp3s just like always.

I had been looking for an answer to that question.

I have used napigator a couple of times and am wondering what is the big deal if napster gets shut down.

Can't I still use the napster client to access any of the large number (and certainly a growing number) of opennap servers to get music the exact same way?

Is there anyway that Napster/RIAA could shut down those (other than legal action/scare techniques against each server owner)?

I have been using Napigator ever since the threat of a Napster Shut down over the last summer. I usually get better connections from servers other then the Napster controlled ones. So if Napster gets shut down, it would not effect me that much.

So if we can just continue to use Naspter w/Napigator, why all the big hubbub from the media about Napster getting shut down? I saw CNN do a piece the other day listing alternatives like Gnutella and IMesh, why didn't they just say, get this tiny piece of easy to use software (Napigator) and just go on using Napster like you always did?!

Is it positive that Napster can't stop us from using other servers with their client?

Are you sure? From what I've read, napigator connects to the main Napster server to get a list of servers. Napster normally chooses the best server for you. Napigator simply gives you the ability to select your own server instead of it being automated. I could be wrong.

Well, what you heard was wrong. If Napigator connected to a Napster server to get the serverlist, it wouldn't get 3rd-party servers like MusicCity. Napigator is 100% independent of Napster, and when (if) Napster is shut down, Napigator will still enable you to connect to other servers that aren't affiliated with napster.

Yeah, Aimster is pretty much the first good program to be born from AOL hq. It's ultra-supa smooth like greased teflon on wet ice. Each person that runs it is his or her own "Napster server" for only that person's buddies. The best part though is that the communications are encrypted and therefore protected by the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (makes it a crime to circumvent anti-piracy measures built into most commercial software). This is the same bass-ackwards piece of legislation the RIAA and MPAA pushed thru Congress that allows them to make it "impossible" for us to copy copyrighted material (read: inconvenience those who want to copy it and frustrate all others because it doesn't work). It's the b*tch slap to the RIAA and MPAA that they've been needing for a long time.
