Napoleon Total War/Shogun Total War

I was just reading PC Gamer's Shogun preview and it said ""where Napoleon brought 1v1 campaigns online, Shogun 2 widens the field to offer full cooperative campaigns."

Now, the only total war game I ever had was Rome Total War, and it's possible that it might be the single player game I've spent the most total time in(Everquest or BF2 for multi).

Can anyone elaborate, then, on Napoleon's "1v1 campaign"? Is it what I hope for when I think of putting a live human faction in RTW's campaign?
