NanoBSD.....FreeBSD on a thumb drive....

I'm curious to know if anyone here has ever had any success with NanoBSD.

The image for a 512 meg image is located at

I tried it myself....unfortunately, I didn't get far. The computer wouldn't even detect the boot loader.

I wonder if the instructions for copying the image are actually correct, or if the img is just bad.

Never heard of it. There's a FreeBSD based live cd though, so I probably wouldn't try this.

B: Isn't the second FreeBSD disc essentially a live CD? Sure, you don't get a pretty graphical interface, but FreeBSD ain't about pretty pictures.

C: When will someone post a script or torrent that will combine both FreeBSD ISOs into a single DVD ISO? The major Linux players have DVD options now. Let's get some *BSD action going in this direction.

When you have an installer thast fits on a single floppy, a DVD isn't a huge deal..

Sorry, n0c. No network installs for me. Besides, I'm only asking for a DVD ISO since there are already two CD ISOs for the full districution.

ISOs *may* be a waste iff you're only working with one machine. Besides, you cannot always assume connectivity to the Internet for installs. How many network installs would it take to reach 1.14GB of transferred bits (that's the size of 5.4-RELEASE ISOs 1 and 2). 584MB (for 6.0-CURRENT, June '05)?

Download the stuff once, setup an FTP Server, serve the rest locally. If you have the bandwidth to download an ISO, you have the bandwidth to do a network install.

That would work *if* all of the machines were still networked together even if none of them are not connected to the Internet. With the kind of work I do, I don't always have that luxury. Oh, and I have to keep the original install media locked away in a safe.

Turning a boot floppy + packages into a bootable install CD is trivial anyways.
