VIA has created tiny motherboards (12cm square and 17cm square). most have about a 1GHz cpu. the bigger ones have a pci slot and standard dimm ram slots, the 12cm ones have a sodimm slot and no internal expansion. i think they suck but are sweet, what about you?

I've looking into these, a little. I like the concept. Basically it's a cheap MB with the CPU 'welded on'.

One of the interessting target markets for these guys seems to be the PC in you car. If people take to insisting that a real PC should be part of the equipment onboard this could mean a lot of new territory for the mod-types.

Does anyone know where I might be able to buy a nano-itx board. (The 12cm x 12cm one).

I have had a look around but can't seem to find anywhere.
 
Nothing cheap about them I have seen, more like $135 or more for anything current.

BTW it isn't just the size they are VERY low power, silent no fan power supplies etc.
 
The 17x17cm ones are somewhat widely available online and B&M (Fry's). Haven't seen the 12x12cm ones for sale. With these boards you pay for the small size, meaning if size doesn't matter you can get faster for cheaper. If size DOES matter and you can live with the lower performance, these should work okay. If size DOES matter and performance also DOES matter, then you'll have to buy one of the Shuttle-type mini systems and strip it of parts.
