syncing my ipod with usb 😱

actually my sister just lost her usb cable for the nano and i was seeing if my old firewire cable would work

Consumers have given up on firewire. Firewire is still out there and used a lot in the prosumer and professional markets. Apple dropped firewire support in the ipods because not a lot of consumers knew what it was so they wanted to make it easier for the consumers.

I actually read that they dropped Firewire support due to size constraints. When they made the nano, there wasn't a whole lot of room in there, so they dropped FireWire off the PCB to save space.

They have since then stopped using firewire on all later ipods. So the 5, 5.5 gen ipods, and 1, 2 gen nano.

I'm sure it's a combination of those things. A shame too, I love firewire.

I actually still have, and use, a first-gen iPod that only uses firewire - I had to get a firewire card for my PC back in the day. At least Apple still includes firewire in their laptops - does anyone else?

Apple didn't give up on FireWire... wtf? FireWire is by far a better option for external hdds. How about a daisy-chain? can usb do that? I don't think so. You can have multiple FireWire hard drives with only ONE fw port on your mac. FireWire is faster tha USB 2.0 (and I talking about fw 400 here).
It can also be used to network to computers, to move data across them. You use Firewire to run your Mac on Target Disk mode.
I can go on.

Hardly. An external drive I bought came with both and I tried both and noticed no real difference and I tend to trust the USB stack more because more people use it so it gets more attention.

And? So buy a $5 USB hub and you can do the same thing.

Kinda OT here but not with Windows, at least not with Vista or 2K. AFAIK XP was the only release that supported firewire networking and MS removed it from Vista because no one used it.

You use Firewire to run your Mac on Target Disk mode.

That's probably the only real advantage.

i think you can charge via firewire...just not sync. sucks i know, but hey, its what the consumers want. more people have usb 2.0 than firewire (so i hear).

i think the 4th gen ipods (ones that first got the click wheel and were in 20GB and 40GB capacities) were the last ones to have firewire syncing...

don't they have external sata now for harddrives?
but yea firewire just wasn't worth supporting anymore for ipods, everything has usb now

Yea, eSATA is around now, but not all the systems have it, and I can't think of any Macs that have it by default. Furthermore I am fairly certain that FireWire is faster than eSATA
