Nandub now supports mpeg4v2

Nice try, madthumbs.

As it says in the documentation of Nandub, and as DOOM9 has said, and as I have said in numerous prior threads about this subject MPEG-4 V2 is *not* vastly superior to DivX - in fact the V3 codec has superior motion compensation, and other than that the V2 codec has different default DRF values which are IRRELEVANT as the SBC encoding method allows you to manipulate these values anyways.

And since everyone probably has the DivX codec already installed on their systems, there is no reason NOT to encode to DivX - unless you are in the business of servicing newbies.

LOL

Actually, what I meant was that the only advantage to MS-MPEG4 V2 was that, files produced using it can be played on the average newbie's computer, because I beleive it is a default codec present in most Win98, WinME, Win2K installations. I don't think it's in NT or 95, though.

DivX OTOH, has to be installed seperately. Big deal.

Divx can also easily be crushed for what it is, a hacked mpeg4v3. M$ can easily disable it in it's next version of Direct X that would be required to play newer games. I'm not the only one who feels that the mpeg4v2 codec is superior to divx either. The whole phenomena behind divx is that it was hacked, and free software was made that exclusively supported it. It became a "buzz word" that people could type into search engines and get quick positive results. Until now, I haven't even bothered learning nandub. If it takes 2 cd's to get DVD comparable video, and DVD quality audio, then that is what I use. If mpeg4v2 is so bad, then why not just support mpeg4v3? I don't believe there are any limitations or reasons for hacking it anymore.

MS disabled the ability to encode using their MPEG-4 codecs in the AVI format at some point (a certain version) to encourage the use of ASF thus the hack was necessary. A couple years ago there were lots of different hacked files of the various versions floating around and by unifiying under one with a name and installation program, DivX ;-) made it EZ for everyone. You are still free to encode with any hacked version you like and change the FOURCC codes so people with the original crippled codecs can play them. They may not have access to all the advanced properties settings though like the CPU quality slider.

I really doubt MS would "ban" a particular fourCC code, but even if they did, simply change the fourCC of DivX to XXXX or ZZZZ or something, and write a program which converts all of your divx .avi's to the same fourCC codec, no problem-o. 😉
