Which named.conf should I be editing when making configuration changes to DNS?

There's /etc/named.conf but since named is chrooted there's also /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf.

I usually just edit both but do I have to?

more than likely one is symlinked to the other.

ls -l on each and check.
