named/bind randomly bails out

Red Squirrel

No Lifer
I have a caching DNS server on my fedora core 9 server. At random, it will just stop working and I either have to wait 5 minutes or restart the service. During this time it's using lot of resources and it's consuming over 2GB of ram. What would cause this?

Any interesting entries in the logs? (/var/log/messages , I think)?

Is it visible from the Internet? i.e., chances of attack / exploit?

That DNS is local only to my network, UNLESS the delay is actually because of an outside DNS taking long, I'll have to try a local domain next time it happens. Nothing interesting in the logs that I've spotted. I'll try to check them again as soon as it happens next time though. This happens maybe once a day, or less. Not very often. I thought it was making the load going high (that's been an issue with that server) but the load was 0 at the time I checked.

Nothing in logs, and it seems it was only internet domain names that were slow. Looks like it may be my net bailing out then, and not DNS.
