Last night I setup a few free webhosting accounts and my first paying account as well.

People will usually ask where's the best place to register a domain? Ever since discovering NameCheap.com I have recommended them to everyone. Last night a customer registered a domain updated their DNS nameservers and this morning it's already propogated and the website is online!!!

I offered the AT'er a good deal, $30/yr for 300MB/5GB hosted by MaxMatrix.com.

Unfortunately I've run out of free webhosting accounts but you can still get a very hot deal for webhosting from:

$4.99/yr RippleHost.com (yes it's still $4.99/yr but don't expect any tech support)
$9.99/yr e-rice.net (AT Hot Deals thread)

My two favorite deals are:
$9.95 for 6 months AddAction.net (which hosts my website GottaDeal.com) I love the custom bluetrix cPanel with auto installers which allows you to create your own forums, pichosting and more with just a few clicks of the mouse.
$13.50/mo dathorn.com aphex and I have accounts with dathorn.com their servers are located at the highly rated ThePlanet.com) best of all look at the price!

I run a busy forum and Dathorn looks very attractive to me, I like the speed! How is your experience with them? Ever query the tech people?

dathorn.com's speed is great, I believe aphex has a few accounts hosted their including his forums.

Before getting a hosting account I would suggest registering for their forums and posting a question in their Pre-Sales forum. I would post which forum software you're using including version, how many registered members, how many active members on average and how much bandwidth you'll normally use. Some forums are too big and Andrew (owner/founder) is honest enough to tell you that you should get a dedicated server.

I have submitted 3 trouble tickets all were answered within hours.

Another nice feature about dathorn.com is you're a RESELLER so you have access to a WHM (WebHosting Manager) from which you can create hosting accounts for as many domains as you want.

So you can provide hosting for yourself, your friends, family and even paying customers.

Mallow - I forgot, which webhost did you sign up with? How do you like it so far?

PoPPeR - Great, glad to be of help. What kind of website are you going to host, what are your webspace/bandwidth requirements and your monthly budget?

Thanks for the link to NameCheap RossMAN. I was just thinking at work today about starting up my own page again. I once owned a particular domain through DomainZero I beleive it was, but then they decided to start charging, and took away my free domain.

I've wanted to start it back up ever since then, but never really wanted to put forth the effort, mostly since it was just a personal project, and not many hits were recorded either. Not that I expected it to be popular, though.

I may have a few questions once I get going, but I think I'm going to do it. Out of the ones you listed, RossMAN, which webhosting service do you recommend? I definitely like the 4.99/yr RippleHost because of price, but is it a reliable hosting service? Is it fast? I would be willing to pay an extra $5 bucks for better hosting, hell, it is for a year.

Thanks again for the random thread!!

EDIT: Hell, I went ahead and registered my domain for 2 years! Thanks a bunch, now I gotta remember how to use Flash again.....:D

WoodchuckCharlie - I would either go with RippleHost.com for $4.99/yr or e-rice.net for $9.99/yr ... RippleHost should be fine for your needs but DO NOT EXPECT tech support.

Which has the best interface? I've done this before, but it's been a while, so I consider myself a newbie again. I'm willing to go with either one, which would you recommend specifically? I've read the Anandtech thread for e-rice.net, but I'd hate for my $10 investment to go to waste if they couldn't keep it going. Is any of the worries in that thread warranted?

Are you talking about me?
Lol
So far everything works great, and I have to agree: use Namecheap.com

WoodchuckCharlie - In the long run you're going to get more bang for your buck with e-rice.net since RippleHost is $4.99/yr but $9.99/yr after that ... however RippleHost has the BETTER cPanel vs e-rice.net's Ensim. Either company could take your $5 or $10 and go out of business tomorrow or 10 months from now, you're taking a gamble. I was skeptical of e-rice.net at first and still am but their forums seem to be great, several AT'ers have been happy with them so maybe they're legit but I have never heard of them until I read that AT thread. If I HAD to choose and didn't need tech support I'd go with RippleHost because it's cheaper the first year, better cPanel and Alan also owns the larger SplashHost.com

If you want the best of both worlds plus a webhost that has been around since July 2000 (almost 3 years) then I would go with AddAction.net who is offering $4.30/mo average. Plus you get A LOT more webspace storage, bandwidth, an awesome custom cPanel bluetrix with auto installers and great 24/7 tech support (which I've used before with great success). I trust them to host my website and so far I have been very happy with the speed, reliability and tech support.

slikmunks - You're welcome, glad you've enjoyed it so far.

adlep - Yep you're my first paying customer, you never replied to my e-mail a few days ago ...

As with buying any computer/electronics item I always encourage people to RESEARCH a webhosting provider they're interested in.

One of the best resources to research a webhosting provider is WebHostingTalk.com use the SEARCH function.

Rossman: I signed up for ripplehost. All has been great. No noticable down time and I'm satisfied. However, you are correct, don't expect tech support from ripplehost ^_^

Just signed up for it minutes ago. The interface is great. Only thing I don't like is what seems like the random username and password they assign to access your account. I'm not sure if there is a way to change this, as I've not browsed thoroughly, but it's not a big deal.

Thanks for the info! I'm all excited now to learn some stuff.

Where's the best site to learn about all the wonderful things you can do with a webpage?

RossMAN:
Gracias for all the groundwork ;)

Does it cost any extra for access to the Web Hosting Manager?
....you just have to tell them you're a reseller when you sign up or what??

Thanks

Infos - The good news is ALL dathorn.com webhosting accounts automatically are resellers and get a WHM. I'm already hosting about 18 domains including mine, my wife's, some family, some co-workers and AT'ers here. It's nice being able to offer webhosting to whoever wants it, all they need is a domain name and you take care of the rest.

The bad news is this :(
