Name upgrade w/ no performance

Why is it that when ATI or Nvidia comes out w/ a new video card lineup such as the X1*** or the X***, the consumer also sees the high end cards increase in performance, but the mid-range cards, such as the X600 and X300 never have large performance changes with their upgrades, the X1600 or the X1300. It just seems like they add more features.

probably because if it's newer people will buy it even if it's not really much faster....

kinda like how some people think that "oh, a new alienware PC is gunna be like 10x faster than a custom PC" just because it looks pretty and is expensive doesnt mean it's faster

just my $.02

I'm not 100% sure on X1300 vs X300, but I know the X1600XT blows away the X600XT for sure, it's similar to a GF 6800 in performance. The X1600 Pro is similar to a 6600GT, which isfaster than an X700XT, which is faster than a X600XT.

Then you have the 7600GT which is much faster than the X1600XT, while the 7600GS is much faster than the X1600 pro.

However, then there is the X1800GTO which is fast if not faster than the 7600GT.

edit - a 7600GT outperforms a 6800GS AND a 6800GT. Keep in mind that the 7600GT is a mid range card that replaces the 6600GT!!

Actually the 7600GS is around the speed of the 6600GT/slightly faster, so it isnt MUCH faster.

The 7600GT is an impressive card, but it's hard to recommend it when the X1800GTO can be had for $170~.

Lately there have been no killer midrange cards that offer higher performance than the last gen high end card, like was the case with the 9500p, or the 6600gt. A 7600gt comes close to the x850xt in performace, and that's about as good as you can expect. The x1800gto may be just as fast or a bit faster, but it's only a stop gap card. Eventually it should get replaced by the x1700xt, which may be the next killer midrange card, but we don't know yet.

In the budget card sector things change even slower, since the primary concerns in that market are profit and saving costs, not performance. Many people expected the new budget cards like the x1300p to offer 8 pipes and performance at least as fast as a 9800p. That didnt happen, and it still has 4 pipes, and does not beat a 9800p, but at least it's the fastest 4 pipe card on the planet.

I did hear the G73 hence the 7600GT/GS might have a hidden quad. Would be interesting 🙂 7600GTX?

The leadtek 7600GT extreme with 590/1600 and the modified cooler looks pretty good though.

It doesn't. Quit wishing.
