Name this old PC game

I'm trying to remember the name of this old PC game I used to play back in the 90's. The game was sort of like Archon, where you had a chess-like field area where you took turns moving various monsters, and when you attack an opponent the game turns into a real-time action top-down fight. It had units like fire elementals, wraiths, and a big red demon. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called.

I remember playing that game... but I can't remember what it was called. I looked a bit- it might be Archon Ultra.

I remember playing something similar with my friends. Did it have a Harpy that drained life when it played a song? Sorry don't remember the name of it.

I played this in college a bit. It was fun for a while, but the action part of the game was meh. This is the game you are thinking of also I am pretty sure.

How old are we talking? C-64/Atari 800 era, or was there another version?

Interesting old game that was. Buy monsters, then fight then to upgrade. No ending or anything - it's a real old game - but fun.

I think I own a PC copy (probably unopened), but it'd be a headache to look for it.
