Name This Game

Anyone know of a game where you start out on a map with all sorts of locations and every so often a icon of some sort appears on a location and you can go in and do some sort of puzzle at that location or whatever. I'm pretty sure it was an RPG sort of game but not 100% sure. Any idears?

oops yeah should've said it was for NES 😀 Mario 3 has the type of map I'm thinking of, you see it all at once not as a overhead view walking aorund it...but it was more of a puzzle game than a adventure...along the lines of myst 🙂
